This week, students across Racine County head back to school - so we're celebrating where that journey can lead.

Meet Khush Patel.

In 2022, Khush received the J. I. Case High School Scholarship through the Racine Community Foundation. This spring, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This fall, he begins medical school. Along the way, he conducted immunotherapy research, earned a fellowship at the University of Georgia, co-founded a nonprofit, and figured out exactly the kind of doctor he wants to become - one who understands his community and works to close the gaps within it.

None of that is our accomplishment. It's his. But we're deeply honored to have played a small supporting role in his story.

All week, we'll be sharing Khush's journey - what the scholarship made possible, what he built with the freedom it gave him, and where he's headed next. His story is a reminder of what becomes possible when a community invests in its young people.

At the Siena Retreat Center, the birds nesting by the prairie have quite a story to tell.

They're purple martins - long-distance travelers who migrate all the way from the Amazon basin of Brazil to breed here in North America. In the nest box on Siena's grounds, you might spot a female perched on top, her belly white, or a male below with his iridescent black feathers catching the light. Pause a moment, and you'll hear their calls fill the air.

It's a small, easy-to-miss wonder - and it's exactly the kind of thing Siena invites you to slow down for. Along the Lake Michigan shoreline, its gardens, prairies, and walking trails are open to all, offering a place to breathe, notice, and reconnect with the natural world. Whether you come for a retreat or just an hour of quiet, there's always something worth pausing for.

Everyone deserves a friend. It really is that simple. Pictured here are two such friends, Kirby and Madeline, brought together by the Senior Companion Program, Inc. Racine WI.

This program matches volunteers with older adults across Racine County for weekly visits - the same friendly face, showing up week after week, turning a standing appointment into a real friendship. For a senior who might otherwise spend long stretches alone, it becomes something to look forward to. And if you've ever felt lonesome, you know that this can be a lifeline.

It's free to every client, available to any senior in Racine County who could use a little more connection in their days.

Companionship isn't a luxury - it's tied to our health, our happiness, even how long we live. We're proud to support the Senior Companion Program's work, thanks to the generosity of our donors - because no one in our community should ever have to feel alone.

"Athena was just 6 weeks old when she arrived at the Racine Campus - Wisconsin Humane Society alongside her 2 littermates. The tiny kitten was suffering from a painful injury that peeled the skin away from her lower lip and jaw. While there is no way to determine how she found herself in such painful circumstances, the vets at Wisconsin Humane Society knew surgery would correct the problem, free her from pain, and put her on the road to adoption.

Spending much of her recovery time in foster care with her siblings, Athena was healing as fast as she was growing, and their endless antics seemed to distract her from the fact that she was ever injured in the first place. A little over a month later, Athena had healed from her surgery and made quick work of impressing her adopter. Thanks to the Racine Community Foundation, this is just one of so many stories of successful adoptions at WHS Racine Campus!"

Summer isn't over yet - and the Root River is still waiting for you.

There's plenty of season left to make the most of, and River Bend Nature Center has the canoes and kayaks to help you do it. Grab a boat, glide out onto the water, and soak up those long, warm afternoons while they last.

Rentals are first come, first served - $20 for members, $25 for non-members, for up to three hours on the water. Kayaks seat one, canoes fit two adults (or two adults and two small children), and life jackets and paddles are provided. Rental hours run 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekends.

Don't let these last weeks of summer slip by. The water's right here, ten minutes from downtown Racine.

Tomorrow, take a walk on the wild(flower) side.

Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum is hosting a free Wildflower Walk on Saturday, August 22 at 10 AM, led by Conservation Land Manager Nicole Zeisler. Wander the prairies and woodlands to spot seasonal blooms - including some unusual and beautiful ones - while learning why these plants grow here, how they support the ecosystem, and what makes Hawthorn Hollow such a special habitat for native species.

Bring your camera. There will be no shortage of photo-worthy moments along the way.

Admission is free (donations gratefully accepted), but registration is required and space is filling up - so reserve your spot now.

The last one of the season - let's send it off right.

Downtown Racine's HayMarket returns to Monument Square this evening, Thursday, August 20, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM - and it's the final night of the year. Racine's only night market goes out with local makers, food trucks, a beer garden, and the energy that's made it one of the best summer traditions downtown.

Tonight's soundtrack comes from blues artist Ivy Ford, bringing an acoustic performance to close out the season in style. Browse dozens of vendors, grab dinner, settle in with a drink, and soak up one last summer evening on the Square.

Parking is just $4 all day in nearby ramps.

Ready for the spotlight. 🤩

A whole crew of volunteers showed up this past weekend with buckets, rags, and plenty of elbow grease to scrub, dust, trim, and spruce up every corner of the Racine Theatre Guild - getting the space gleaming for the start of its 89th season.

There's something fitting about it. For 89 years, RTG has been powered by exactly this: people who love this place showing up to care for it. The volunteers who clean the lobby, the actors who take the stage, the audiences who fill the seats - a community theater is only as strong as the community behind it, and Racine's shows up every time.

Here's to a clean slate, a new season, and the people who make it all possible. We're proud to support the Racine Theatre Guild and the next chapter about to unfold.
