We had a great day cleaning up Clayton Park and the native perennial flower bed. Volunteers dug up some impressive weeds and laid down a new layer of mulch. Tulips and lilies were planted around the park. And we picked up some trash. We have plans for another flower bed in Clayton Park - stay tuned!

Exciting development above the Horlick Dam!

Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network has secured a grant to design a new boat launch and natural area at Horlick Park on the Root River 🛶 This investment from the Wisconsin Department of Administration helps preserve public access to the only developed dock with nearby parking north of the Horlick Dam once it's removed. Public meetings are being scheduled for early 2026 at River Bend Nature Center.

We extend our sincere thanks to Racine County, Racine County Parks, River Bend Nature Center, the Sierra Club Southeast Gateway Group, and all other organizations that provided letters of support for this project!

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Steelhead Facility in Lincoln Park and Salmon Unlimited is hosting an open house on Saturday, Oct 11. It’s a super fun and interesting event for the whole family. TONS of lake run trout and salmon swimming up the Root. Happy Labor Day from the Root River Council! Enjoy the weather and take a walk along the root river pathway in Clayton park. You’ll find our native perennial patch thriving! Bumblebees and butterflies galore. All this after 4 months since planting.

We’ll do some weeding and maintenance in the fall and next year the patch will grow even more.

It was a beautiful evening in Island Park with great food, drinks and music. The weather couldn’t have been better! Thanks to all who came together last night - were a strong community that loves our parks and the Root River Pathway!

The Root River Council and City of Racine, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and Perspective Brewing Company is excited to offer another great opportunity to enjoy Island Park.

The Mambo Surfers will play from 4-7pm. They are a musically creative Americana band from Milwaukee. Together almost three decades, one of the founding members is of Ho-Chunk descent and the other is a multi-talented musician originally hailing from India. They claim kinship with rogue folk, jam rock, world music, jazz and blues with lyrics focused through a socially-conscious lens.

Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available to purchase from Perspective Brewing. Pina Mexican Eats food truck will be on hand for those that wish to purchase food. Otherwise, bring your snacks, blankets, and chairs and enjoy music in the park.

We're excited to bring a Zumba workout to the park before the music starts. Zumba will be led by Adrian Barelas from 2-3:30pm. Stay for the music that starts at 4pm.

The rain didn't keep us from enjoying Family Fun Day at Island Park! Thanks to the organizations and city departments and officials that joined us. We're grateful to live in a community that shows up for each other and supports Racine's growth and wellbeing! Fun times!
