Did you know…? 👇🏼

* Children who read 20 minutes a day/5 days a week are exposed to 1.8 million words in one school year. Compare this to students who read 5 minutes per day – they will be exposed to 282,000 words per school year.

* Reading helps foster empathy – a child experiences “walking in someone else’s shoes.”

* Children are exposed to different ideas and cultures.

* Reading also improves critical thinking.

* Reading increases knowledge of correct grammar, along with robust vocabulary knowledge, resulting in improved writing skills.

* Students who read 20 minutes per day score significantly higher on standardized tests of reading.

* Reading with your child, or having them read independently before bed, can help them to relax and wind down from their day.

Getting your child to read is not always easy. However, allowing them to read high interest material, asking them questions to help them interact with the text, and modeling that reading can be fun is a great start!

Today was a great day of partnership and distribution. We were honored to partner with pastor Gwin Jarriel and Quitman Church of God for their back to school event. We provided 20’x25’ tarps (provided by Brooks County EMA), shelf stable food boxes, disaster preparedness item kits, and resource information. Several other partners were there in addition to the Church of God volunteers, including (but not limited to) Virgil Thomas with Primary Care of Southwest Georgia, Jessica Arnett with the Department of Public Health, Beth Lee and Wendy Graham from Brooks County Schools, and Pastor Jim Pitt with Morven Baptist Church. It was a great, great event with a lot of resources shared with Brooks County residents to build resilience. Here’s to a good school year and a year free of any “wind events” resulting in the need for those awesome tarps! A big thanks to everyone for all their help and support to help make today a huge success!

According to a 2024 survey, about 10% of students at Brooks County Middle School use tobacco/nicotine products NOT the 50+% that was estimated by the same students.

The social norm is MOST students don't use tobacco/nicotine products!

Youth that do use are more likely to use "new" types of tobacco/nicotine products rather than traditional ci******es.

Yesterday, 15 key leaders of Brooks County met for a Long Term Recovery Strategic Team meeting. We discussed Community Assessment Findings, the upcoming Disaster Preparedness Kit giveaway on August 29th in partnership with Quitman Church of God, and the overall achievements made throughout the past 16 months since forming the Long-Term Recovery Strategic Team and throughout our grant period. The goal of this project was to help increase disaster preparedness both of the residents and of organizations in the community and provide for needs that arose post Hurricane Helene. Through this project, tens of thousands of pounds of food was distributed, four Brooks County sites were prepared to be hubs after a natural disasters (generators, tents, Swamp Coolers, and generator receptacles (at three locations)), many general household items were distributed, disaster preparedness information was distributed through monthly Resource Kits and a Social Media Campaign, a Community Assessment and Key Leader Interviews conducted and evaluated, and thousands of disaster preparedness items (emergency radios, tarps, water, whistles, flashlights, fans, can openers, file protectors, etc.) were distributed. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of this amazing initiative so far!
