Yesterday, 15 key leaders of Brooks County met for a Long Term Recovery Strategic Team meeting. We discussed Community Assessment Findings, the upcoming Disaster Preparedness Kit giveaway on August 29th in partnership with Quitman Church of God, and the overall achievements made throughout the past 16 months since forming the Long-Term Recovery Strategic Team and throughout our grant period. The goal of this project was to help increase disaster preparedness both of the residents and of organizations in the community and provide for needs that arose post Hurricane Helene. Through this project, tens of thousands of pounds of food was distributed, four Brooks County sites were prepared to be hubs after a natural disasters (generators, tents, Swamp Coolers, and generator receptacles (at three locations)), many general household items were distributed, disaster preparedness information was distributed through monthly Resource Kits and a Social Media Campaign, a Community Assessment and Key Leader Interviews conducted and evaluated, and thousands of disaster preparedness items (emergency radios, tarps, water, whistles, flashlights, fans, can openers, file protectors, etc.) were distributed. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of this amazing initiative so far!
