I’m indeed blessed to have lived through the service of fifteen US Presidents, beginning with FDR. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor when I was one year old, setting off our involvement in WWII. Next came the Korean Conflict, the Viet Nam War, the Gulf War, Bosnian War, Kosovo War, and now the War on Terror since Sept 11, 2001. Along the way were the murders of JFK, MLK, RFK. The turmoil of the 60’s and LBJ’s getting the Civil Rights Act passed changed the landscape of our country, especially in education. I learned to type on a manual typewriter, and now, sit here sending messages around the globe with the stroke of a key. I’ve been truly blessed with good health, long life, and being an eye-witness to history. I'm more than blessed to have had so many family and friends to help me celebrate these birthdays that span more than 3/4 of a century....4 scores & r years to be exact.
Getting old is a good thing if you consider the alternative....BUT....even I was young once upon a time....in 1960 walking through Fair Park to attend the Texas-OU game in the Cotton Bowl. How time flies!!

ATTENTION: WOOD COUNTY RETIREES
I've visited with Judge White, and our increase is included in the budget. It's based on the CPI, which should help catch up the long-time retirees some. The increase will be effective January 2025, and each retiree's increase will be different.
I'm THRILLED with Judge Kevin White's leadership and the Commissioners' efforts and teamwork to make this happen for all us county retirees. Please take a minute to express our appreciation to each of them.
This is HISTORIC.....Wood County retirees are indeed blessed. Thank you to each of you who has assisted in this effort.

PSA... per Judge Kevin White, our request for a pension increase is still in the budget....as of today. I do not have any information as to what is being considered. NOTHING is FINAL until the budget is adopted and the tax rate set.
I'm hopeful that a significant increase is possible, but I consider any increase at all as a victory for all retirees.
I'm also hopeful that the Court will develop a retirees' plan for future courts to follow while we have a county judge who does as he says he will do.
I genuinely appreciate Judge White's efforts on our behalf.

I've not had any news regarding pension increases for retirees. The court is having budget workshops with elected officials. Judge White has promised to notify me when they get to the retirees. I'll post my updates as I get them. Of course, everyone has the right to contact the judge and Commissioners individually. Please post any information you may have.

I appreciate County Judge Kevin White's effort and work to present retirees' pension request to the Court in a fast and fair manner. I appreciate the Court for its kind patience in hearing our concerns. Since retirees have been neglected for more than 30 years, the cost will be significant, but we all need to remember a LOT of money has been saved by the County over the past three decades. I'm hopeful that the Commissioners Court will consider and grant a MUCH NEEDED and reasonable pension increase for all of us.
The highlighted paragraph says that retirees received three COLA from 2008-2014. I can say, for sure & for certain, that I have NEVER received a COLA since I retired in May 2005. I recall one increase of 50 cents!! that's right, half a dollar for the year. My retirement gross amount today is $88.21 more than my first check in May 2005. That averages out to a yearly raise of $4.64 for the 19 years I've been retired.
Please read the news article carefully, and feel free to comment--just be kind and nice.

GREAT MEETING with COMMISSIONERS COURT THIS MORNING. Fred Morrow, Becky Burford, and I addressed the Court regarding the need for a pension increase. Judge White has worked with the County Auditor and TCDRS and presented possible plans to the Court. The Commissioners and Judge White were all patient and attentive to our needs and appear to agree that there is a NEED for a pension increase. The next step is to determine the cost.....and then determine how much the County can afford.
I fully understand the budget process and appreciate Judge White's efforts on our behalf. I plan to attend future budget workshops that include TCDRS benefits.
Retirees were well represented this morning: Carolyn Saxon, Jan White, and Kathy Gilbreath attended....and Sally Attaway, who's not a county retiree, went with me in support of our efforts.
If you see Judge White or any of the commissioners, please express our appreciation for their kind consideration of our efforts.

====================

I worked several years as Wood County assistant auditor, a few years as Wood County Treasurer, and served 21 years as a Quitman ISD trustee. Along the way, I learned a little about budgets and taxes, and I learned a lot about respect and appreciation for those who came before us and laid the foundation for our county and school.

There are 3 questions to ask regarding budget items:
1. Is it needed? 2. How much will it cost? 3. Can we afford it?

IS A PENSION INCREASE NEEDED FOR retirees? YES
Up until about 1983, TCDRS paid county retirees a 13th check. Then they stopped the yearly 13th check, and turned pension increases over to County Commissioners Courts to determine and budget for retirees’ pension increases.
Judge White tells me that his work with TCDRS & the County Auditor show that retirees have received three pension increases. I can remember only one…..and it was 50 CENTS….that’s right, half a dollar! My retirement check today is $88.21 more than my first check in May 2005….that figures out to a yearly raise of $4.90 for the 19 years I’ve been retired.
The proposed 2024 budget included a 6% increase for current employees. A similar consideration for retirees should be given.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Cost will depend on number of retirees and the pension numbers. Perhaps Judge White and the County Auditor can provide those figures.

CAN WE AFFORD IT? YES
The County has a current surplus balance of about $19 million….plus a projected additional surplus at the end of this fiscal year. Certainly, we can afford a raise for retirees and budget for it from this surplus balance.

I appreciate your service to the County and trust that you will deliver a meaningful pension increase for us retirees.

I have set up a FB for WOOD COUNTY, TEXAS, TCDRS RETIREES.
WOOD County, TEXAS, Retirees is the title FB accepted. This purpose of this page is to provide easily accessible information for ALL TCDRS retirees of Wood County. Fred Morrow and I are working to get a meaningful raise for retirees.....the best I can remember I got a 50 cent raise in 2011~~ yep 50 cents a month 13 years ago.
Judge Kevin White advised me that he is working on a presentation for an increase to present to the WOOD COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT, TUESDAY, MAY 14, 9:00 A. M.
Please join the Wood County, TEXAS, Retirees page.....and plan to attend Commissioners Court, TUESDAY, May 14, 9 am.
