This was the winning "MY PTA STORY". Would love to hear your story in the replies section.
My PTA Story
By Cristy Happ
As a stay at home mom, I have been fortunate to be able to spend extra time with my kids. I didn’t want that to end when they began attending school, so I decided to get involved at their school once they started. I figured, getting involved would help me be in the know of what goes on in their school and I
could meet other parents in the process. At Information Day for my son’s Kindergarten year, I was greeted by a smiling volunteer who handed me a package with what seemed to contain thousands of papers with loads of information. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I read and filled out every single one of them! After what seemed like hours, I walked up to the volunteer again and asked her how I could get involved. She suggested I join the PTA and come to their meetings. At the first meeting, everyone seemed very friendly. A volunteer handed me a list of opportunities that PTA had to offer. As I went down this incredibly long list, I saw they needed someone to help with Book Fairs. I had worked in a school library years before so I figured it would be a good place to start.
It was love at first book! I helped every day during book fair week. It was so much fun watching the kids get so excited about buying books to read! I couldn’t believe it! Hundreds of students from Kindergarten through 6th grade visited the book fair that week and all of them were so happy to be there! Not to mention, my son was thrilled to have his mom at school. The following year, I took over as Book Fair Chair and I’ve been doing it since! My son’s now a 6th grader! Year after year, it has been extremely empowering to be able to help all these kids expand their love of reading!
Not only did I join the PTA and became the Book Fair Chair, I also became part of the Executive Board. Over the years, I have held several positions on the Board and this year I was honored to be asked to take the position as PTA President. These past few years have been a remarkable journey, one that is not over yet but has been incredible so far. Little did I know that joining the PTA to help others, would help me forge
some of the greatest friendships of my life!
I am extremely grateful for the PTA as it has helped me grow as a person, become a better parent as well as allowed me the opportunity to be a part of my children’s educational experience. I love all the wonderful memories we have made over the years at our school thanks to our PTA. If you’re not a PTA member, you should join! You don’t know what you’re missing!
