Happy Monday IAEP members!

Earlier this month, Local R7-664 Lapeer County EMS in Michigan held its first annual Run with Heroes 5k race to raise money to support the local and EMS mental health programs.

Over 130 participants signed up and ran the race, which took place during the Lapper Days festival. The local successfully raised over $2500 thanks to their efforts, which will help fund educational efforts to promote good mental health practices for the local and beyond.

Congratulations to all who completed the race and to Local 664 for their amazing work putting it all together! 🏃💨🚑

Union strength adds up! 📈💪

Numbers like these show exactly why the IAEP fights for stronger union representation across EMS every day. Collective bargaining does more than protect jobs; it creates lasting financial security for working families.

For the IAEP, it’s all about one thing: for EMS, by EMS! 🚑

Congratulations are in order for Local 684 Stamford EMS Paramedic Jeffrey Sachtjen, who retired this month after 35 years of service to the agency!

Sachtjen was a founding member of Local 684 in addition to serving as president of the local. For over three decades, he dedicated his life to caring for his patients and making sure his colleagues had the correct protection, advocacy and representation while doing so.

We wish Jeffrey all the best in his retirement and thank him wholeheartedly for his countless hours of work making Local 684 truly great! 🫡🚑

The IAEP is mourning longtime IAEP Local 187 AMR Los Angeles member, President and EMT Victor Ordorica, who passed away this week after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Ordorica served as an EMS professional for over 30 years, and as IAEP Local 187 President for a decade. He is remembered for his boisterous, jokester personality and relentless dedication to improving the lives of his coworkers through his union work.

“He was a good guy who tried to make things better for us and took on the role as our Union President when he didn’t have to,” said fellow Local 187 member Taun Tanaka. “He was always trying to look out for us and would fight for us.”

Our thoughts remain with those who knew and loved Ordorica in the wake of this devastating loss.

Victor’s family is asking for donations to assist with funeral and memorial expenses. You can learn more on Victor’s GoFundMe page at the link in our bio.

“Our brother dedicated his entire life to serving his country, saving lives, and helping others without ever expecting anything in return,” wrote Victor’s sister, Monica Rivera, on his GoFundMe page. “Now, we humbly ask for the support of the community whose lives he touched, so we can honor him with the dignity and respect he earned.”

Rest in Peace, Victor. 🕊️🚑

The EMS professionals of IAEP Local 876 Medix Ambulance Services in Lewis County, WA are raising the alarm over management’s investment of its time and resources into union busting instead of patient care.

For nearly a year, the Employer has committed to treating us as adversaries rather than the professionals who provide prehospital care to this county. Our Union members have been terminated, punished, lectured, and faced changes to policies and changes outside of the status quo simply because the Employer refuses to accept our Union status.

The amount of time, energy and financial resources being redirected from patient care into fighting a union is appalling.

Our attached letter and timeline to the Lewis County Board of Commissioners details a clear pattern of disrespect, disregard, and dishonesty on behalf of the Employer over the past ten months.

Your providers ask for your attention and assistance in improving working conditions and holding the Employer accountable – the lives of the people of Lewis County quite literally depend on it.

The IAEP was on the scene for the passage of a public safety bill to improve recruitment and retention in the state of Connecticut.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont invited IAEP National Director Phil Petit and IAEP Representatives Chris Kennedy, Scott Schaub and Mark DeBiase to witness the signing of Public Act 26-12 into law.

The law will increase benefits offered to police officers, firefighters, correction officers, National Guard, and EMS personnel in the state. This includes tuition reimbursement, mortgage assistance, healthcare coverage and tax benefits meant to bolster staffing and support for these first responders.

“This new bill will be integral to giving our EMS professionals in Connecticut the financial and professional support they need to do their jobs successfully,” said Director Petit. “We are grateful to Governor Lamont and the Connecticut legislature for recognizing their hard work and taking real steps to keep them provided for in their jobs so they can keep providing for their patients.”

According to a release from the Governor, the highlights of this bill include:

College Tuition Waivers: Waives tuition at all CSCU schools and CT State schools for state and local police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel.

Mortgage Assistance: Requires the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority to develop and administer a mortgage assistance program to assist state and local police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel purchase homes in the communities they were hired to protect. The types of assistance offered could include down payment support or any other appropriate housing subsidies.

Municipal Tax Abatement for Surviving Domestic Partners of First Responders: Expands an optional municipal property tax abatement for the spouses of first responders who died in the line of duty to also cover domestic partners.

Public Safety Personnel Recruitment and Retention Task Force: Establishes a task force to study recruitment and retention issues for public safety personnel.

Congratulations to Connecticut EMS providers for the passage of this incredible legislation!
