Moment #54 Celebrating Family: A Weekend of Joyful Moments
Larry and his family had a great time together in St. Louis. They explored the zoo and experienced many joyful moments while swimming and spending time together at the hotel, sharing memories and laughter.

“Because of your support, our family was able to spend precious time together in St. Louis,” shared his daughter Stacy. “Those moments brought smiles, laughter, and joy during a time that is otherwise filled with uncertainty and heartbreak. The memories we made together on that trip are gifts that we will carry in our hearts forever.”

The family expressed their thanks for the kindness, compassion, and generosity shown during Larry’s battle with terminal pancreatic cancer. “You gave our dad the opportunity to enjoy life, make memories with his family, and experience a special outing that meant so much to all of us.”

Thank you to all our donors who partnered with us to make this precious moment possible!

Where are they now? We were curious, too! So, we decided to check in with our scholarship recipients and find out what’s new in their lives and how their educational journeys are unfolding.

One of last year’s Dr. Ouwenga Scholarship recipients, Aive Smith, reported that his first year at Taylor was amazing. His department emphasises holistic and functional medicine, which is helping Aive develop into the kind of medical provider that he wants to become. He shared, “As a Christian school, Taylor has also done a great job of integrating faith and learning. I am beginning to explore what it means to be a steward of creation and how helping others is one of the greatest callings of all.”

He expressed that he appreciated meeting a wide variety of people and how living alongside and learning from others increases one's ability to be empathetic and conversational. He said, “From the times that were solely focused on studying to the time hanging out with the guys, my time at Taylor has had an enormous impact on my life, even in just one year. I am thrilled to go back to school next semester to continue my adventure.”

So what is he up to this summer? Aive shared, “This summer I am working as a medical assistant intern at QMG.” Aive is grateful for this opportunity to grow, gain valuable hands-on experience, and build meaningful relationships. He knows this internship will “inform my future decisions with this current experience.”

During National Cancer Survivors’ Month in June, we celebrate cancer survivors' lives after cancer, recognize the strength of those who have faced a diagnosis, and acknowledge the ongoing journey of survivorship. In recognition of this special month, the Foundation encourages survivors to sign cancer ribbons, which will be displayed on the tree in front of the QMG Cancer Institute in June. These ribbons symbolize the lives, victories, and spirit of every survivor. This simple, heartfelt gesture honors the strength and courage of all touched by cancer. Whether your journey as a survivor has just begun or spans many years, the Tree of Hope stands as a tribute to you and a symbol of hope for the future. Survivors are invited to join us at our Hope Grows Here event on Sunday, June 7, from 1–3 PM at Frericks Gardens and Coffee House, where ribbons will be available.

“I just take it day by day.”

That’s been Lowell G.’s mindset since 2014, when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s marginal zone lymphoma. Over the years, he has navigated multiple phases of treatment, remission, and ongoing care. Throughout his journey, Lowell emphasizes that he hasn’t done it alone. He credits his strength to the guidance of his oncologist, Dr. Christian Khoury, the team at the QMG Cancer Institute, and the constant support of his wife, who has been right beside him through it all.

This National Cancer Survivors Day, we celebrate Lowell and all the survivors in our community who show us what real resilience looks like every single day. We invite cancer survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, family, and friends to join us at our annual "Hope Grows Here" event at Frericks Gardens Florist & Gifts on June 7, from 1–3 PM.
