Healthy soil sets the stage for thriving agriculture. Just one teaspoon of soil contains billions of microorganisms—including bacteria, fungi, nematodes, insects and earthworms—that keep your soil productive. Here are five tips to improve soil health:

1. Keep soil covered with plants or organic matter.
2. Minimize tillage to reduce compaction, erosion and w**d growth.
3. Increase biodiversity by growing a variety of beneficial plants.
4. Maintain living roots—plants feed the microorganisms that support healthy soil.
5. Integrate grazing animals, birds, beneficial insects and earthworms into land management.

If you're interested in practical, field-tested approaches to modern grazing management, you won’t want to miss our December 4 webinar featuring Jim Armendariz, State Rangeland Management Specialist with USDA-NRCS New Mexico and a rancher from the Santa Rosa area.
Jim brings 16 years of on-the-ground experience across New Mexico (BLM and NRCS), and he’ll be sharing on the use of virtual fencing and remote water sensors (Telemetry) on storage tanks and how adopting these technologies has benefited his Family’s Ranching operation. Jim will also discuss funding options that can help producers pay for virtual fencing and how his soil health journey has changed the way he thinks about grazing - why soil-health focused approaches are often more intuitive and easy to apply than older, more rigid grazing systems.
