Today is National Youth HIV+AIDS Awareness Day! NYHAAD is so important because according to Advocates for Youth "Young people living with HIV are the least likely of any age group to be retained in care and have a suppressed viral load." This is why providing education and resources on HIV+AIDS to people of all ages but especially young people is critical.

Scroll to see some really important statistics regarding young people and HIV. Check out NYHAAD.org for more information on NYHAAD and how you can get involved.

No, you will not automatically be tested for HIV or other STIs at an annual physical appointment. Your health care provider should offer HIV and STI testing if you are s*xually active and older than 13. If they do not ask, you can request HIV and STI tests. You can decline an HIV test if you don't want to be tested.

Yes it is! You can have more than one STI at a time. Also, being treated does not protect you from getting the same STI again. Having an STI makes it easier for you to get HIV. Having HIV also makes it easier for you to get an STI.

We're continuing on with our series of questions to ask yourself and your partner when identifying the signs of a healthy relationship.

Take some time to read through and answer the questions to yourself. What does kindness look like to you?

Finding out that you have an STI can be difficult. There are a lot of emotions that someone can experience like fear, anger, embarrassment or shame. Some people might have a difficult time figuring out how to tell their partner(s) that they are experiencing this and that their partner(s) should get tested for STIs.

Partner Services is a free, confidential and voluntary program through the Department of Health that can help make navigating this process a lot easier. They can help people get connected to services after getting a positive STI result and they can also help someone assist in notifying their partner(s) in a discreet, private and confidential manner.

They can help through anonymous third part disclosure, dual disclosure or be there to support someone who may choose self-disclosure.

We've gone over the 10 signs of a healthy relationship many times before so instead of going over them all again here's some signs to look for to determine if you're in a healthy relationship (romantic or not!)

Like our friends at One Love say, Real love isn't perfect so you may not be feeling all 5 of these right now. If that's the case, ask yourself why and then maybe start a conversation with your partner or friend or even yourself about what you need to feel these things.

Did you know that February is also considered National Condom Month? February 14th (AKA Valentine's Day) is also considered National Condom Day.

We love educating youth about the 14 steps it takes to use condoms properly and we also never skip out on the opportunity to remind everyone that TAG bags are available to everyone at any Hudson Headwaters Health Center for FREE!

Happy National Condom month!

Our favorite thing to say as Health Educators is "Talk to your partner!" but sometimes it's hard to know where to start and what points should be talked about. Here's a list to help you get started:

✨Are you ready to have s*x?
✨Do either of you have a latex allergy?
✨What brand/kind of condoms do you want to get?
✨Where are you getting them from?
✨Are they free or do you need to buy them? Who will pay for them if you need to buy them?
✨Where are you storing them?
✨Have you both gotten tested for STIs?

There's so much more that can be included in these conversations but this is a good place to start!

This is a question we commonly get. When latex breaks down it acts similarly to when a person grabs an old rubber band and pulls it, it snaps really easily and sometimes even breaks apart into smaller pieces. Condoms can break just as easily after they expire!
