Hour Children, Inc.

Hour Children, Inc. "Love Makes the Difference" Hour Children, Inc. They generally have few job skills, little education and few, if any, financial resources.

is a multi-faceted family service organization that provides housing, permanent and transitional, and a wide array of supportive services that transform the lives of women and their families involved in the criminal justice system. Our organization name was chosen by our dear friend, Jean Roulet, because the children of incarcerated mothers lives are dictated by the "hour" of the mother's arrest,

the "hour" of the visit and the "hour" of her return. Company Overview

Our goals are to ensure that the children in our care are healthy, socially well-adjusted and achieving academically, and that their mothers make a successful transition to independent living. We work closely with each mother, tracking her progress or addressing problems with obtaining a job, managing a household, and caring for her children. On a long-range basis, we keep track of program participants to ensure that they are still employed and housed, and have not returned to prison. Hour Children is unique because the delivery of services that we provide to women on both sides of the “wall” is unmatched. When women leave prison, as formerly incarcerated women, they face a mountain of challenges beyond their prison record and the associated social stigma of incarceration. Once released from prison they are able to get employment skills development through Hour Working Women Program. **Youth Voices for a Safer Future**

Young people deserve to have a voice in conversations that shape their communities and their futures.

We’re proud to share *So Many Reasons to Close Rikers*, a youth-led video series that highlights young people’s perspectives on the urgent need to close Rikers Island.

Hour Children was honored to partner on this important project and to amplify the powerful voices of our young people. Their stories, experiences, and perspectives remind us why this conversation matters.

More videos will be released in September. We encourage you to watch, share, and help amplify these important youth voices.

We are pleased to share this resource "used worldwide by prison advocate organizations, chaplains and volunteers, correctional staff, reentry groups, churches, and educators."

Dr. Covert uses his experiences as both police officer and state prison chaplain to examine the environment of those incarcerated, with emphasis on the particular areas of the stress experienced by those incarcerated, and how it impacts their spiritual formation and the role of the Church in offering encouragement.

Yesterday, Hour Children stood on Rikers Island as the City marked a major step toward closing the jail complex — the permanent closure of the North Infirmary Command and the transfer of three facilities to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.

While the City looks ahead to the Island's future, our focus remains where it's always been, on the women and children at the heart of this work. Our Executive Director, Dr. Alethea Taylor, was on-site and quoted in the City's official announcement:

"We remain committed to collaborating with partners to advance approaches that center dignity, healing, and successful reentry… lasting progress is built one step at a time." 💚

40 years in, and we're still focused on what comes next: helping families heal, reunite, and rebuild.

📍 Thank you to NYCDCAS and the New York City Department of Correction for including us in this milestone.
