Announcing Joton: BMHM’s Creative & Embodied Self-Care Workshop Series!

Joton is a multi-modal, community-based self-care program designed to support mental and emotional well-being within the Bengali community through creativity, movement, mindfulness, and cultural connection.

Joton (যতন) means care, tending, and nurturing. This workshop series is designed to help you explore self-care, creativity, and wellness in ways that feel accessible, culturally meaningful, and enjoyable. Each session is a safe space to learn, connect, and nurture your well-being.

Joton workshops are open to Bengali adults of all genders, immigration statuses, and experiences. No prior experience is required — just curiosity and the willingness to care for yourself. Workshops are no-cost or donation-based to remove financial barriers and ensure equitable access for participants.

Our Joton series will officially launch in
July 2026. Stay tuned on social media or sign up for our mailing list to be in the loop! Email [email protected] or DM us on IG to join our mailing list.

Joton will be funded through a $5,000 award from CitizensNYC’s 2026 Community Leaders Grant CitizensNYC

A message from the BMHM team

TW: r**e, murder, su***de, s*xual assault, gender-based violence, violence against children

We address you with heavy hearts as we process the shocking news of the r**e and murder of 8-year old Ramisa Akter by her neighbor, Sohel Rana, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. On the same day, 10-year old Md Abdullah’s dead body was found in a Madrasa bathroom in Banasree. Police investigations revealed he was s*xually assaulted by 19-year old student Shihab Hossain.

These are not isolated incidents. The rise of gender-based violence, harm that is directed at an individual based on their biological s*x or gender identity, reveals the state’s failure to protect the safety of children. The patriarchy harms all genders, but especially those who are most vulnerable. According to the human rights group Odhikar, thousands of underage girls have experienced s*xual violence in Bangladesh in recent years. These numbers only reflect a fraction of cases as many incidents remain unreported due to stigma, fear of retaliation and harrassment during judicial proceedings. Justice is often delayed or completely denied, and many survivors and grieving families are left navigating trauma with inadequate legal and emotional support.

It is natural to feel sadness, anger, confusion, or even numbness when we hear about such horrific violence. Please allow yourself to move through the coming days with extra care for your own needs. Connect with people who feel safe, look into resources available in BMHM or your local area (some listed in the third slide), nourish your body, and create boundaries with work/school demands as you see fit. You are not alone.

BMHM stands in solidarity with all survivors of s*xual violence and those who are grieving and seeking justice for the loss of their loved ones.

Our community came together at an art gallery to celebrate Bengali creativity, expression, and mental health. Attendees also got a preview of our Directory of Bengali Mental Health Professionals, the only one of its kind launching this season!

We raised over $5,000 with $2500 in net proceeds directly supporting our mental health programming, including Alaap, our monthly peer support group.

Thanks to everyone who joined our April Alaap! We had meaningful discussions about how we process vicarious trauma from global conflicts at in Jackson Heights.

Vicarious trauma is emotional stress experienced as a result of continuous indirect exposure to violence, tragic events, and witnessing trauma experienced by others. In this Alaap, we explored how global conflicts can trigger reflections on our own recent histories as Bengali Americans, and strategies for navigating stress and uncertainty.

Alaap is a rare space for mental health conversations for Bengalis in New York City. We offer Alaap sessions free of charge for the community. With your support, BMHM can continue to offer an ongoing safe and healing space for those who need it most. We are grateful for any contribution you can make to support Alaap. Donation link in bio!

Keep an eye out for the next Alaap 🗣️ TBA on social media and our newsletter!
