EQUINOR POSTPONES OIL DEVELOPMENT IN THE ARCTIC
NorwayOil and gas
By WWF Arctic Programme
Equinor, Norway’s state oil company, and its partners announced that they will postpone oil development in the Wisting field Barents Sea which leaves 200 million tons of CO2 in the ground.
The Wisting oil field lies in the Barents Sea, about 310 km north of the Norwegian mainland and only about 50 kilometers south of the Arctic sea ice edge. The Wisting oil field is also dangerously near the island and nature reserve Bjørnøya (Bear Island) which is home to more than a million seabirds, who nest on the steep cliffs on the southwest tip of Bear Island. Any offshore oil exploration, drilling and production threaten wildlife and their habitats, especially in this area.
The lack of infrastructure here means that it can take days or weeks to respond to a spill and render clean-up ineffective. Local environments can be ruined for decades, effectively wiping out local populations of certain species and affecting local people’s livelihoods and food security.
Equinor stated that inflation and rising supply costs related to the energy markets and the war in Ukraine are to blame for the decision to postpone. A new decision will be taken in 2026.
This is a major win for the environmental movement, both in Norway and internationally. The WWF Arctic Programme and WWF-Norway along with many other environmental organizations have campaigned against the development of Wisting project and a massive opposition from the public has built up over the past months.
Karoline Andaur, General Secretary, WWF-Norway said:

French authorities were racing to clean up an oil spill approaching the island of Corsica on Saturday, launching an "anti-pollution plan" to prevent the slick from reaching sunbathers on the coast.

The spill was spotted on Friday by the French navy during an exercise carried out from the Solenzara air base in Ventiseri, Corsica, according to maritime officials.

By Saturday morning, officials had detected two oil slicks over 19 nautical miles (35 kilometers), which were drifting about 5 nautical miles from Corsica's east coast, between Aléria and Solenzara, France's Mediterranean Maritime Prefecture said in a statement.

Will it be next, and if so, when?

These are questions often asked about Larsen C, a huge ice shelf, twice the size of Wales, attached to the eastern edge of the Antarctic Peninsula.

A dozen or so smaller floating ice platforms, mostly to the north, have either disintegrated or substantially retreated in recent decades, as the region's climate has warmed.

So it's with interest that we learn from new research that Larsen C may be more resilient than we dared hope.

Scientists have been drilling through the ice shelf, and just in front, to get at sediments that record past ice behaviour.

And what these investigations tell us is that Larsen C has maintained integrity throughout the last 10,000 years. It's had a couple of phases of retreat in previous warm spells - roughly 9,000 and 4,000 years ago - but it's never collapsed like its northern cousins.

"It's clearly a robust ice shelf; it's hung in there for a long time," says study leader, Dr James Smith from the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge.

"So with that resilience we could potentially prevent a collapse if we curb carbon emissions and get a good grip on atmospheric warming. But what I would say is that Larsen C is probably as vulnerable as it's ever been in terms of the last 10,000 years because it's likely at the thinnest it's ever been over that period," he told BBC News.

"How Can You Help Our Planet Climate Change Fast
This HIstory Is True About Artic Melt WE # ACTNOWARCTIC CLIMATE CHANGE
What happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic. The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on Earth, and the world is already feeling the effects.

Arctic countries need to lead the cut of CO2
The hottest temperature ever measured above the Arctic circle was recorded in Verkhoyansk, Siberia this past June. In fact, the + 38.6°C reading was just one of many highs that made June 2020 in Siberia five degrees warmer than any June from 1981 to 2010. A recent Oxford University-led study shows man-made climate change due to carbon emissions made this Siberian heatwave 600 times more likely.
