On Aug 12, 2026 Quartzsite experienced what we are hoping is our storm of the century.
Throughout the east and central part of town there was extensive flooding.
Interstate 10 was closed down on account of water running over the top of it under the Central Avenue bridge. Some traffic was rerouted through the town via Main Street between exit 17 and 19, which exacerbated the flooding problem as the trucks were pushing the water that was over the curbs at the main corner of Central and Main Street. The water flow into Tyson wash was just slightly below the upper banks north of Main Street, flowing at a very fast rate of speed.
Tyson‘s Well Stage Station Museum which is operated by the Quartzsite Historical Society experienced 14 inches of water flowing through the property and into the museum itself, causing a considerable amount of merchandise loss in our general store.
Thankfully, our new archive building was high enough above the waterline that only a minor amount flowed into it, causing minor losses of books and printed material. Kudos to the folks who contributed and ran a campaign that financed the new building.
We are presently in a cleanup phase, having dried most of the wet areas using fans. We’re also pulling out and cleaning anything which wasn’t destroyed, as well as removing the mud from all the floors and lower walls.
There remains a tremendous amount of work to get everything cleaned up before opening for the season on November 1. Museum tours are presently suspended until cleanup is complete. However, anyone showing up to help us clean up, will be welcomed and encouraged to tour.
