In 1893, Frederick Douglass invited Ida B. Wells to lunch. She noted a place across the street, but indicated they would not receive service there. “Mr. Douglass, in his vigorous way, grasped my arm and said, ‘Come, let’s go there.’” Together, they “sauntered in...as if it were an everyday occurrence, cocked and primed for the fight if necessary.” Douglass grabbed a table and chair for him and Wells, as “paralyzed” staff looked on. A stand-off ensued with wait staff until the proprietor realized it was Frederick Douglass, and warmly welcomed him while sharing stories of a time past when Douglass visited his hometown. “When [the proprietor] finally went to another part of the room, Mr. Douglass turned to me with a roguish look and said, ‘Ida, I thought you said that they didn’t serve us here. It seems we are getting more attention than we want.’”Frederick Douglass spent his life fighting for justice and equality. He never knew the date of his birth. This is something he struggled with throughout his lifetime. Douglass believed that he was born in the month of February in 1817. In fact, records show that Douglass was born in February of 1818. He chose the 14th of February for his birthday because his mother would call him her “little Valentine." Unfortunately, Douglass never knew much about his parentage. His mother, Harriet, was sold off when Douglass was but a child, and he only met her a few times before she passed away. Though born enslaved in Maryland, he escaped as a young man and became a leading voice in the abolitionist movement.

In 1897, three Swedish explorers—Salomon August Andrée, Nils Strindberg, and Knut Frænkel—embarked on a daring mission to become the first people to reach the North Pole by hot air balloon. Their ambitious journey, fueled by the spirit of discovery and the optimism of the age, ended in tragedy when their balloon, the Örnen (Eagle), crashed on the Arctic ice just 65 hours after takeoff. Stranded in one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth, the trio faced unimaginable challenges as they struggled to survive.

For weeks, the men fought against the brutal Arctic conditions, relying on their ingenuity and resilience. They hunted and ate polar bears to sustain themselves, a testament to their determination to survive against all odds. Despite their efforts, the harsh environment ultimately claimed their lives. Their camp, along with their bodies, journals, and a camera containing undeveloped photographs, remained frozen in time, preserved by the icy landscape for over three decades.

In 1930, a Norwegian expedition stumbled upon the remains of the ill-fated journey. The discovery of their camp provided a haunting glimpse into their final days. The journals and photographs, once developed, revealed the explorers’ struggles, hopes, and the camaraderie they shared even in the face of certain death. These artifacts offered a poignant narrative of human ambition and the relentless pursuit of the unknown.

The story of Andrée, Strindberg, and Frænkel is a powerful reminder of the courage it takes to push the boundaries of human exploration. Their journey, though tragic, embodies the indomitable spirit of adventure and the willingness to risk everything for the sake of discovery. As the explorer Ernest Shackleton once said, “It is in our nature to explore, to reach out into the unknown. The only true failure would be not to explore at all.” Their legacy inspires us to embrace the unknown, to dream boldly, and to persevere, no matter the odds.

The Sivatherium was a remarkable member of the ancient megafauna that thrived when Earth’s oxygen levels were much higher. This giant herbivore first appeared in Africa during the Late Miocene, around 7 million years ago, and survived until the Late Early Pleistocene. Fossil remains discovered in the foothills of the Himalayas suggest it roamed the region about 1 million years ago.
Some theories suggest the Sivatherium may have persisted until 8,000 years ago, as similar creatures appear in ancient rock paintings from the Sahara and Central Western India. However, no fossil evidence supports this, and these depictions likely represent other animals.
Resembling a modern okapi, the Sivatherium was much larger and more robust. It stood about 2.2 meters (7.2 feet) tall at the shoulder, reached an overall height of 3 meters (9.8 feet), and weighed between 400–500 kg (880–1,100 lbs), though later estimates suggest a much heavier 1,250–1,360 kg (2,755–3,000 lbs). This makes it one of the largest known ruminants, rivaling today’s giraffes and the biggest bovines.
One of its most distinctive features was its large ossicones (horn-like structures). Males had two broad ossicones on top of their heads and another pair above their eyes. Its strong shoulders and powerful neck muscles helped support its heavy skull, making it a truly impressive prehistoric giant.
