The Young Marines of the Marine Corps League is a national youth program for boys and girls ages 8 through the completion of high school who are in good standing in school. We are dedicated to "strengthening the lives of America's youth" and encouraging children "to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle." Our unit, the Quartz Hill Young Marines, strives to achieve these objectives in our local commu
nity through drills and community service. Drills consist of physical fitness activities such as running, calisthenics, and team sports; field activities such as camping, hiking, and rappelling; leadership training via classroom instruction, based on our program's four Young Marine guidebooks; and military discipline in the form of uniform inspections and close order drill. The unit is led by a dedicated staff of registered adult volunteers and the Young Marines themselves. Youths join our unit during our enlistment period, usually held once per year. The only requirements to join the unit are that the youth is between 8 and 18 years old and is in good standing in school. The youth enters Recruit Training, where he or she will earn the title "Young Marine." After Recruit Training, Young Marines participate in drills that help them earn rank and awards (aka ribbons) as they progress through the program. Young Marines have the opportunity to participate in national schools, such as Junior, Senior, and Advanced Leadership School, and the online Young Marines University. In addition to drills, Young Marines engage in community services, including veterans appreciation events, color guard ceremonies, providing assistance to fellow community organizations (such as the YMCA), and other activities that promote a love for one's community and pride in oneself as a citizen of the United States. We provide community service throughout the Antelope Valley and beyond. On a larger scale, Young Marines also participate in a yearly Division Encampment--a four-day event that often includes hiking, canoeing, rappelling, land navigation, obstacle courses, and much more, all in the company of dozens of other units throughout California and beyond. These are but a few of the adventures that await Young Marines after graduation from recruit training!
