Black Rock Retreat Beach Relay

Black Rock Retreat Beach Relay The 1st Annual Black Rock Beach Relay is scheduled for September 12-13, 2014. The route travels through some rolling terrain in Southern PA and into Maryland.

The Beach Relay will follow the same course as the BR2RB 125 Mile Bike-a-Thon, starting at Black Rock Retreat and ending at Camp Arrowhead on the shores of Rehoboth Bay, Deleware! The route then flattens out in Delaware and remains that way until the end of the run (see attached topographical map). The Bike-a-Thon and the Black Rock Beach Relay occur on the same weekend. This event is meant to be

a fun event which doubles as a fundraiser to raise money for Black Rock Retreat. Some of the money raised will go towards sponsoring kids who cannot afford to attend the camp. If you have questions about what else your money is used for, you can contact Black Rock Retreat. Each team will be responsible to arrange their support vehicles which travel with them to Rehoboth, carrying team members who are not running. Teams will provide their own food and drinks for the duration of the relay, all at the cost of the teams. Teams will register to run this relay with a maximum of 10 team members. Each team will create a team name and a theme for their team. Photographers and videographers will be posted along the route. To win a prize, each team member must run at least 3 four-mile segments. Each team is required to have a team captain who will receive all of the information for the Black Rock Beach Relay. Teams will be responsible for checking the Estimated Running and Start Times chart to see when they need to start from Black Rock. The goal is for all teams to arrive at Camp Arrowhead by 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 13th. Estimated Running Paces and Start Times
Team Run Paces Total Run Time Start Time from Black Rock
9 minute miles 18.5 hours Fri. 8:30 PM.
8 minute miles 16.5 hours Fri. 10:30 PM
7 minute miles 14.5 hours Sat. 12:30 AM
6 minute miles 12.5 hours Sat. 2:30 AM

Here are some things to consider:

You can run one support vehicle for the whole 125 miles or you can run two support vehicles for the whole 125 miles. Teams can split up the run by running one team of 5 for 62.5 miles and have the rest of the team meet you in another vehicle to run the last half of the run. For instance, some people might not enjoy running at night. Or some people might not want to wait so long between their running segments. You also have the option of running with multiple teammates if you are not comfortable running alone at night. A suggestion is to keep your running segments at less than 4 miles at night so your support vehicle is not far away. Make sure your support vehicle stays a comfortable distance from the runner. Some runners like some distance from the vehicle. Another suggestion is to go ahead of the runner 2 miles and wait for the runner to pass. Repeat that all day. To register, each team is required to raise a minimum of $1,000. Included in the registration fee are a free t-shirt and a participatory plaque. Registration ends August 15, 2014. Relay volunteers will record your team’s start time and finish time to determine 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place and prizes will be awarded. Since the majority of the run will be on routes where cars travel, it is required that all runners wear headlamps and reflective vests. Teams must raise a minimum of $1,000
