History and Background of American Legion Post 242 – Wallace Willard, Keller, PA
American Legion Post 242, located in the Wallace Willard area of Keller, Pennsylvania, is a long-standing veterans’ organization with roots in the early 20th century. While the full historical narrative is still being compiled by the post’s historian, the available records indicate that the post was organized in 1922 as a result of a meeting of former servicemen in the local high school auditorium PennsylvaniaDB.com. At that time, the community already had an informal group of World War I veterans, and they concluded that the American Legion was the leading representative veterans’ organization in the country — a view that has proven accurate, as the American Legion is now the largest wartime veterans’ organization worldwide quakertownamericanlegion.org.

John Rivers — WWII Marine Corps Veteran and Medal of Honor Recipient
John Rivers was a United States Marine Corps Private from Quakertown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who served with Company H, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division during World War II Honor States. He was killed in action (KIA) on 21 August 1942 during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands Honor States+1.

Service and Actions
Rivers was serving as a machine gunner with the Eleventh Machine Gun Squad when his unit faced a strong Japanese landing force at the Tenaru River Military Medals Database+1. Lacking the cover of riflemen, his squad had to expose itself to repel the attack. Despite heavy odds, Rivers and his men fought fiercely, repelling the enemy. In the process, Rivers was killed in action, sacrificing his life to help secure the position Military Medals Database+1.

Awards and Recognition
Posthumously, Rivers was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty Military Medals Database+1. His citation notes that his personal valor and courage directly contributed to the defeat of the enemy. He also received other honors, including the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal Honor States.

Legacy
John Rivers’ actions at Guadalcanal exemplify the bravery and sacrifice of Marine Corps personnel during one of the Pacific Theater’s most critical battles. His story is remembered as part of Pennsylvania’s Gold Star Veterans legacy, honoring those who gave their lives in service to their country Honor States.

On Friday a group of us went to the Iron Pigs 🐖 game. Today we played our last game for the season. For the first time in 25 years we got the whole season in. What an accomplishment that was. We even played one of our games in a steady drizzle. On Sunday June 28 we will have our pizza 🍕 party. This will be at Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church Trumbauersville ⛪️. Please be there by 330 if possible 🙏. God has blessed 🙌 me with many gifts and all walks of life to celebrate it with. We are all loved .

So, today's first pitch was thrown out by my cousin Chris Hackney in memory of his mom.
His catcher was one of our newest Minor League players Anthony. Chris's mom my Aunt Pat passed away last year. She used to come out and watch the players play. Chris also helped raise money through the Keystone Softball League. Carlos said the opening prayer 🙏 . The National Anthem was sung by Andrew Matzura. Thanks to James Lezoche for doing the Color Guard with me. Just look at some of these pictures and you can truly say we are all God's children 🙏 and are a Family.
