History of:
The Rotary Club Sergeant-at-Arms ensures smooth, dignified weekly meetings by managing logistics, maintaining order, and fostering a welcoming atmosphere. Appointed annually by the club president, the role requires arriving early to set up equipment, greeting attendees, and enforcing meeting decorum with a lighthearted touch.
Core Responsibilities
Meeting Logistics: Arrive at least 15-30 minutes early to arrange seating, set up the podium, and ensure AV equipment is working. Ensure all flags, banners, and the Rotary bell/gavel are properly displayed.
Hospitality & Protocol: Stand at the door to welcome members, visiting Rotarians, and guests. Introduce visitors, assist with name tags, and help everyone feel comfortable.
Maintaining Order: Support the president in maintaining decorum, ensuring members pay attention to the gavel and speakers without interruptions.
Fines and Fellowship: Lead lighthearted "fining" sessions for latecomers or notable member achievements. Collect "Happy Bucks" or "Sunshine Dollars" to raise funds for the club or The Rotary Foundation.
Ceremonial Duties: Often responsible for leading the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, or reciting the Four-Way Test, as well as assisting with voting rituals.
Breakdown: Stay after the meeting to ensure the venue is tidy and all physical club property is properly stored.
