It is National Dog Day and the Meeker Mansion is taking time to celebrate one of the famous four legged companions of Ezra Meeker, Jim the dog.

Jim joined the Oregon Trail team shortly after Ezra Meeker adopted him from a Puyallup famer, also named Jim. James, or Jim for short, was a collie who acted “ not only as a friend, but a bodyguard as well and watchman of the tent or wagon”. Ezra reported that Jim took a liking to the oxen Dandy, but an intense dislike of the other oxen Dave, even getting caught annoying the much larger creature. Jim had his share of scrapes, but always made it out fine. For seven years Meeker traveled with Jim though various landscapes and modes of transportation. For his loyalty, Jim earned his own postcard in Meeker's Oregon Trail card set and was featured in his own chapter of Ezra Meeker's book "Short Stories for Children".

Come learn more about Jim, Ezra Meeker, and Puyallup Valley history at the Meeker Mansion Museum Wednesdays through Sundays from noon until 4pm.

Happy Birthday to the City of Puyallup!

Did you know the city was actually incorporated twice? The "corporation" of Puyallup was originally formed in 1888 with Alexander Campbell as the first Mayor. The Supreme Court of Washington declared the corporation illegal in February of 1890, so the process began again. The City of Puyallup became officially incorporated, for the second time, on August 19, 1890 with Ezra Meeker as the first official mayor.

Want to learn more about Puyallup? Check out the Puyallup Historical Society at the Meeker Mansion Museum. The museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays from noon until 4pm.
