37 years ago, Dr. Gordy Klatt stepped on to a track, right her in Tacoma Washington. His goal, to raise funds to support our local American Cancer Society. One step at a time, one donor at a time, he did just that. 24 hours, 83 miles, and $27,000 later the idea that would grow into Relay For Life was born.

We lost Dr. Klatt in August of 2014, after his own personal battle with cancer, but we didn't lose the spirit of Relay. Relay lives on in each of us who make the ask, raise the money, and step out onto that track to celebrate, remember, and fight back. If you ever thought YOU couldn't make a difference, think again.

Dr. Klatt was one person with an idea. He made many asks and assembled a group of people that made Relay what it is today. You can do the same. Individuals coming together with a common goal, to raise the funds that will finish the fight have culminated in 6.5 billion dollars raised to date and countless lives saved.

Be proud...you are part of the history of Relay For Life and you will be a BIG part of ending cancer. If you have yet to sign up to Relay with us on Saturday, do so today. TacomaRelay.org

Start spreading the news - Road To Recovery Relaunch in Washington State:

After pausing the Road To Recovery® program due to public health concerns during the pandemic, The American Cancer Society (ACS) is relaunching our volunteer driver program with enhanced technology that will provide a better patient and volunteer experience. We are currently able to resume the program in Thurston, Pierce, King, and Snohomish Counties.

A new mobile-friendly website will make it easier for volunteer drivers to view and accept ride requests. Patients can access the program either through the mobile-friendly website or an app that will allow them to submit ride requests and see real-time notifications. Patients who lack access to technology or who prefer to connect via phone can still call 1-800-227-2345 to schedule rides to treatment.

ACS is in need of more drivers to support the Road To Recovery® volunteer program, which provides cancer patients with free rides to treatment.

“Volunteering as a Road To Recovery® driver will put you at the heart of the American Cancer Society’s mission and fulfill a critical need for cancer patients. Even the best treatment can’t work if a patient can’t get there.”

The American Cancer Society takes safety seriously and has implemented new guidelines to minimize COVID-19 risks to patients and volunteer drivers. Volunteer drivers are required to certify that they are fully vaccinated and will continue to maintain that status during their service to the program.

All drivers must have:
· A good driving record
· A current, valid driver’s license
· Proof of adequate automobile insurance
· Access to a safe and reliable vehicle
· Schedule availability
· Regular desktop, laptop, or tablet computer access
