Many are purchasing "homes" using priorities of proximity to schools for their children and employment. This is rational. Observe how small the land is around the home; less than 9 feet to the neighbors or a back yard sometimes fifty feet deep but frequently less than twenty feet. Do not be disheartened. Although there may be HOA regulations about the ornamental plantings for the front yard, consider plantings in the back yard that are native plants, even producing a "wild:" environment. We, each, are Stewards of the land we purchased. Investigate and apply native planting strategies, for wildness, for native habitat for native species of plants, trees, creatures big and small. To purchase a "home" is to purchase the responsibility of Stewardship for the land. The "home" will eventually decompose, but if you create a native habitat, the memory of your Love for Nature will survive the structure you purchased.

So you purchased your home and it cost a lot of money. Here is a tip to save you money on yard tools, such as a shovel.

Many will spend unnecessary dollars on a fiberglass handle shovel when they could get one at a yard sale for $2.

Not strong enough you say? The key is to take care of the wood once a year with Boiled Linseed Oil to preserve the wood. This assumes you are cleaning your tools each use and keeping them stored out of the rain and Sun. Even fiberglass deteriorates in the Sun.

In the first pic some of these shovels are more than thirty years old. The handles are drying in the Sun and I have even dribbled oil into the stem to seal the end grain. Took me less than ten minutes.

Also NEVER use a shovel as a pry bar to move large rocks or loosen roots. Pic #2 shows split steel. There are many grades of steel and you can bet a low price shovel is a bare minimum grade of steel.

If you have a large lot, or acreage and you like that kind of gardening as I do, this is where you invest worthwhile dollars. Pic #3 is a shovel made for prying boulders and the large root structures of Salmon Berry and Himalayan Blackberry. Thick steel and welded to a steel pipe handle. Cost me $80 but as long as it is cleaned and stored properly my great great great granddaughter can use it.

Oil all your wood handle yard tools preferably in the Autumn after you have cleaned them. Store them out of the rain and Sun, use them for their intended purpose and they will last decades.

Oh, and DO NOT try to boil your own Linseed Oil, you will start a dangerous fire.

Advice from Jerome. Call me for your Real Estate needs and I will care for your needs like I do my shovels.

Although many houses use plants, trees and shrubs as a decoration for the house, effective Stewardship indicate the best use of the land should be in harmony with the natural environment. Improve the aesthetics of the architecture, no matter how plain, rather than hide it behind big shrubs.

Trees can be grouped together to create a sheltered micro-environment for small birds. Smaller shrubs should be tiered. Consider planting a wild Rhododendron that branches outward under the trees rather than the standard large rounded bush typically used against the corner of a house.

No matter how small a space is, it is possible to create a beautiful garden setting. The show "Big Dreams, Small Spaces" with Monty Don supplies a variety of inspirations.

Preamble to the Code of Ethics from National Association of Realtors

"Under all is the land. Upon its wise utilization and widely allocated ownership depend the survival and growth of free institutions and of our civilization. Realtors should recognize that the interests of the nation and its citizens require the highest and best use of the land and the widest distribution of land ownership. They require the creation of adequate housing, the building of functioning cities, the development of productive industries and farms, and the preservation of a healthful environment."

One of the strategies to gain clarity when faced with struggle is to be objective. Not necessarily intellectual, just visually stand aside and observe yourself and the relationship you have with the struggle. This becomes easier with persistent practice. You begin to see things how they are rather than what you want them to be.

It is a type of "seeing through."

Stewardship also becomes an objective view. Within this context of Stewardship we repair, remodel and maintain a property more than just because it is our possession or because of an increase in financial value.

We acknowledge it is our home only temporarily and in doing so we honor it by acknowledging it will soon be a home for someone else. This "seeing through" lifts 'possession' or 'ownership' to a status of dignity. The property is better for it. The land, the trees, the shrubs and the birds and deer that feed on it are benefited. The neighborhood benefits. The new Stewards feel the calm and beauty inherent in even simple architecture.

We have not lost anything by selling it. For the home also dignifies its Stewards.
