Pests can be one of the most challenging aspects of successful gardening, especially for gardeners who want to use environmentally friendly methods. At this tour of City Soil Farm we will discuss how managing soil and water in your garden relates to pest management, and how to support our garden allies, beneficial insects! KCD and City Soil Farm staff will share information and strategies they use to reduce the impact of garden pests. We will have hearty snacks, and plenty of time to ask questions and share knowledge.

Topics include:
- Maintaining soil heath, and its role in supporting resilient gardens
- Promoting beneficial insects in the garden
- Evaluating pest damage to identify pests and solutions
- Non-chemical pest control options
- Deciding when and how to use chemical control options

Community Seed Project in action!

Community Seed Project in action!

Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm passionate about growing food and growing community. And the Community Seed Project through Harvest Pierce County and Pierce Conservation District helps growers in Pierce County accomplish both!

The project provides seeds to community (this year it was Scarlett Runner Beans and Cilantro) who plant those seeds and harvest the crop. But the crucial part is letting some go to seed that the gardener saves and brings back next year to share. That way there is at least the same amount of seeds coming back that can be grown to feed the community.

I'm so happy to be a part of this process, even if I didn't follow the sowing directions!
