I am very sad to share with all of you that our storage container for our Troop 503 camping gear was broken-in-to this week (sometime between our meeting on Monday, Oct. 8th and today, Friday, Oct. 12th). We discovered the theft today.
Doug Nagler, our Scoutmaster, has reported this theft and serious crime to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, and a police officer has taken a police report (we have a case number). Stolen equipment includes tents, canopies, propane bottles, axes, etc. The estimated value of the theft at this point is between $3,500 - $4,000 (or higher). We are checking Craigslist and other locations to see if we can identify any of our stolen equipment being resold.
ACTION ITEM: KING 5 Television is going to cover this incident. KING 5 Reporter John Langeler and a Cameraman will be coming to Pilgrim Luthern Church on Saturday, October 13th at 10:30 A.M. (tomorrow morning) to meet and interview with our scout leaders and the scouts. Doug Nagler and rest of the troop leadership welcome any available Boy Scouts to attend the interview and news coverage by the journalist. Any scouts able to attend are asked to be in their full dress BSA uniform.
The journalist is likely to interview the scouts and this will be televised. Naturally, if any parents are uncomfortable with their scout being on TV - please do not attend the interview.
We are hopeful that we can get some (if not all) of our equipment returned. The media publicity (and possible sympathy - boy scout equipment) - may assist in our effort to get our equipment returned. Please note, one reason for the high interest by KING 5 is the very recent theft (last week) of camping equipment valued at over $4,000 belonging to Troop 1539, Silverdale VFW Post. This incident was also covered by the news media, and they believe this assisted in their effort to recover some of their stolen items. I earned my eagle scout award with Troop 1539.
Again, all scouts are welcome to attend the interview with the KING 5 Journalist tomorrow morning.
