Two tough trees cleared. One big one on top of another tree while getting attacked by bees. Only two stings. Second one was two logs that fell back on itself and it was covered in ivy. All clear now.

Bear Update. This is from the Puyallup Police Department. Update on the bear situation in Clark's Creek Park. One of the members of the Berenstain Bears family is still separated from their family and hanging out in the park. The bear was spotted again yesterday up above the dog park area of the park above the trail. PPD responded to the park to attempt to locate the bear, but we could not locate it. WA Fish and Wildlife has deployed a trap in the park to safely capture the bear to relocate the bear back with other members of the Berenstain Bears family out of our area. We appreciate the enthusiasm of this bear being in our community, but it is best for the bear to be back with the other bears that are not in our community. Please keep your eyes wide open if you are in the park or out on the trails until we can reunite this bear for a future family reunion. We will update you when the bear has been safely captured to be relocated by WA Fish and Wildlife.

DeCoursey is such an awesome place for so many people. Hikers, runners, bikers and more all love this area. It’s a place we need to share and work to preserve. From a mountain biking standpoint here are some things we can do to help. **Try not to ride on the Loop Trail. If you must, like from the bottom, use it as an uphill only. In the rare places you have to go downhill in it. Go slow. **Always stop for people on foot, pull over and let them go first. **We encourage you the get a bell. The best one we have found is the Timber Bell. **Do not build new trails. **Do not go down super steep slopes. **Manage you speed where you can stop if you see someone else on the trail. We have to be the solution. Let’s all make it happen. .

I have heard there is a person or persons lobbying to get mountain bikes removed from DeCoursey / Clarks Creek Park claiming we are causing erosion issues. We need to rally and show this is not the case. I know what we have done has made a huge improvement on the trails. It’s eliminated mud and allowed water to flow normally which actually reduces erosion. We will need help from everyone interested in biking in this area. I don’t know where and when but we will keep people posted. But for now we need to be cautious to hikers. Always stop for them and let them go first. We will start putting together a case for us. Also we plan on stopping all trail work until we have a better idea of what is going on and encourage everyone else to do that also. It may be a battle but it’s one we need to fight.

Cleaning drains and why we blow off the leaves.

Some of you may remember last fall when a guy yelled and swore at me for blowing wet, soggy leaves off the trail. So I thought I’d prove a point.

I left a section of trail that’s bad for water unblown. Today I went to fix it and the first photo is what I found. After about ten minutes of work I had the second photo. Wet, soggy, organic materials. Old leaves and sticks that were decomposing. And yes they stunk. I was able to get the area working again in a short time. But if we don’t blow the trails in the fall this is what we would deal with all over the area.

I don’t know what his deal is, maybe he though we were dumb enough to blow off the loam. But we’re not. Anyhow the trails look good. Ready to work some more!

I had always heard about a trolley through DeCoursey Park but had figured it had to do with logging. Over this weekend I met a person on the trail that knew about it. It was a passenger trolley in around 1900 from Puyallup that made its way up the ravine to 104th then out to a station near Fern Hill. These are some of the only photos and a map. I also pulled a LiDAR of the area and you can see the route it took. Those that know Strava segments will recognize Mushy Mushy. On the LiDAR the arrow shows where the trestle would have been. Here is a link for more information about the trolley. https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsouthhillhistory.com%2FNewsletters%2FNewsletter_archive%2FHistory%2520On%2520The%2520Hill%25202004-9.pdf&data=05%7C01%7C%7C5fd61002d29b40b622a308daedb80ee1%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C638083672017894395%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=AA9QoqF0s%2F41VqrZxXvg5%2F99AAHrGV58pMxlE0%2F078k%3D&reserved=0
