On Friday, February 17, we said goodbye to my father, Benjamin F. Hertzberg. He lived life to the fullest. As a young man, he joined the US Army reserves (at 15) and served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers (“Blowing up bridges,” as he always said). He and my mother, Carol, were married in December of 1953 and built a great life together. My father worked for General Foods in its various iterations for 43 years, starting in the mailroom. He remained in touch with many of his colleagues from GF through the Alumni Association after he retired. As a retiree, he also served his community as an active participant in SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives. Somewhere in between a lot of hard work and raising two daughters, he and Carol found time to socialize and travel, accomplishing an impressive bucket list of destinations that included Egypt, Thailand, Australia as well as various stops in Europe and the US. Many of these trips were organized through GF. Family always came first, and Ben would look forward all year to the week the extended family spent together each summer.
Services will be private. Donations can be made in his name to the Putnam County office of SCORE at www.score.org.
“We knew we had an amazing product, but had found it difficult to turn it into true business, rather than a hobby,” Messier remembers.
