Did You Know? Makam Edition
More Than a Scale (It’s a GPS): Unlike a scale, a makam comes with built-in rules for navigation. It's a route or blueprint that dictates where the melody must start, which notes to linger on, how to ascend or descend, and where to resolve.
Makam modal systems go much further, the music theory divides the octave into 24 quarter-tones.
Makams aren't learned as whole 7-note scales. Instead, they are constructed by stacking smaller 3-, 4-, or 5-note building blocks
With makams, almost every single pitch in every octave has its own unique individual name.
Nope, our Overtures and Finales concert doesn't include Makams, but you might score points in Trivial Pursuit.
For the price of two caramel macchiatos, you can attend our concert Overtures and Finales Live in Loudoun, on Sat 11/7 at 7:30 PM Park View High School.

Did you know? Clef Edition
Most familiar: the treble clef is just a stylized cursive letter G, positioned to loop around the line representing the pitch G4. The bass clef is a stylized F with its two dots framing the F line.
But there's others: the Alto, Tenor, Soprano, Percussion, Tab and others. We'll spare you the gory details of these clefs and guide you to google for more information...
Meanwhile, for the equivalent of two lattes, you can get a ticket to our concert Overtures and Finales Sat 11/7 at 7:30 PM Park View HS. Tickets: https://rebrand.ly/LSWNOV7

On World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the teachers and band directors who changed our lives with patience, passion, and the power of music.

Our community band is filled with educators, and every one of us carries the lessons of those who taught us to listen, lead, and play with heart.

To all teachers — past, present, and future — we’re grateful for you.

Did You Know? Composer Edition.
Aaron Copland wrote his first composition at age 11.
Musical roots: Aaron's parents owned a department store in Brooklyn. Aaron broke with destiny. Thankfully for musicians worldwide, he did not take over the family business.
He won the 1950 Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film The Heiress. Go Aaron!
At our Overtures and Finales Concert (11/7 at 7:30 PM Park View HS) you will hear live from Loudoun an Aaron Copland piece - and it's going to be great! Come and hear this and other Overtures and Finales for the price of a large latte and muffin!

Did You Know? Music Stand Edition
The iconic, collapsible metal wire stand was invented in the late 19th century. While it's easily portable, it has earned a legendary reputation among musicians for collapsing under heavy binders, catching on clothes, and turning into an unsolvable metal puzzle when folding back up.
We are eminently thankful to Otto Lagervall, who in 1935 invented the heavy-duty, black aluminum music stand seen in almost every music room. He founded the Manhasset Specialty Company and its "magic grip" friction-tilt mechanism became the global standard for orchestral stands.
We salute and thank you, Otto.
See music stands doing their jobs at our Overtures and Finales Concert 11/7, 7:30P Park View HS. Tickets: https://rebrand.ly/LSWNOV7

🎶 FUN FACT FRIDAY 🍻

Brahms got an honorary doctorate from the University of Breslau in 1879.
His response? He wrote Academic Festival Overture and filled it with four traditional student songs, including Gaudeamus igitur, a song associated with student revelry.
Brahms himself called it a “very boisterous potpourri of student songs.”
So basically…
They gave Brahms a doctorate.
He gave them a party, inside a grand serious concert piece. Way to go Johannes.
You can hear it at our Overtures & Finales concert.
