The People Behind the Harvest | Meet Anthony 🌱

Anthony first came to the farm with his mom and brother as an 8th grade volunteer, and it didn’t take long for him to become part of our farm family.

He kept coming back, spending countless hours in the fields, helping with special projects, and happily taking on just about anything we asked of him. Always with a smile, a great attitude, and a genuine love for being here.

We’re a very small team, and we’re incredibly thoughtful about who we bring on. Not just because our budget is limited, but because we genuinely love working together, and the people who make up this farm mean so much to us. Finding someone who shares that same work ethic, kindness, and genuine care for the mission is something we don’t take for granted.

So getting to welcome Anthony onto our team this summer felt especially wonderful.

Watching someone grow from a young volunteer into a person we trust, appreciate, and absolutely love having around has been one of the really special parts of this work. We can’t say enough about the value of introducing kids to volunteering at a young age. The people they meet, the perspective they gain, the confidence they build, and the chance to discover how much they have to offer others.

Anthony, thank you for all the hard work, laughs, and care you’ve brought to this farm over the years. We feel so lucky that you found your way here with your wonderful family, and even luckier that you keep coming back. 💚

When food is harder to access, the quality of that food matters even more.

Hunger isn’t just about having enough to eat. It’s also about having access to the fresh, nutritious food our bodies need to thrive.

That belief is at the heart of everything we grow.

We grow food specifically for donation, harvest it at its peak, and get it to our food pantry partners across Northern Virginia and DC as quickly as possible.

Because families facing food insecurity don’t deserve what’s left over.

They deserve the very best we can grow.

Today, on that’s what we’re growing for. 💚

The People Behind the Harvest | Will

For years, Will and his daughter Sophie have been one of our favorite father-daughter volunteer pairs, showing up together to harvest, lend a hand, and care for their community.

For Will, this work is deeply personal. He grew up experiencing food insecurity, and today, he gets to help grow beautiful, fresh food for families facing some of those same challenges.

And all those years, Sophie was right beside him.

Now she’s off at college, but whenever she’s home, she finds her way back to the farm and looks for ways to make a positive impact in her community.

There is so much we teach our children without ever sitting down to teach them. When they grow up watching us give, care for our neighbors, and make time for others, they learn that this is simply what we do.

Will and Sophie are such a special part of our farm family, and such a beautiful example of how caring for others can be passed from one generation to the next. 💚

Every season, thousands of people walk into these fields and help us grow food for families across our community.

They plant tiny seedlings, pull weeds in the heat, harvest thousands of pounds at a time, carry very heavy bins, and load pantry trucks until we can’t fit another thing inside.

And I think there’s something really important about that.

This farm works because people care about what happens to people beyond their own homes. They care whether their neighbors have fresh food on the table. They care enough to give their time and do something about it.

And when thousands of people do that together, look at what happens.

Fields get planted. Trucks leave full. Families have fresh food. Friendships form. Kids grow up seeing what it looks like to take care of other people.

That is the kind of community we want to live in. And we feel incredibly lucky to watch it grow here.

Fresh food matters. Especially when access to food is already limited.

It’s not enough to simply provide food. We want families to have access to the fresh, nutritious food they need to thrive.

That’s why we care so much about quality and freshness. We harvest our produce at its peak, and because some sensitive nutrients naturally decline with time and storage, we work to get it where it’s going quickly.

Here, food can go from growing in our fields to a food pantry truck in under three hours.

Because everyone deserves access to the food they need to thrive. 💚

If everyone could see what we see.

Teams showing up ready to give back. Kids learning with their hands in the dirt. Strangers helping each other. People caring for the earth and working incredibly hard to grow food for neighbors they may never meet.

We get to see people at their best here, over and over again.

There is so much goodness in people, and somehow we get a front row seat to it every day.

We will never stop being grateful for that. Or for every single person who makes this place what it is.

If you ever need a reminder of what is right in the world, come spend a morning at the farm. 💚

It’s amazing what three hours at the farm can accomplish.

Fields weeded. Crops planted. Thousands of pounds harvested.

And by the end of the shift, a food pantry truck can leave the farm full of fresh food for families in our community.
Everything we grow here is grown to be given away, and volunteers make that possible.

Three hours can feed thousands.

For months, we’ve watched this food grow. We’ve cared for the soil, planted, weeded, watered, worried about the weather, and welcomed thousands of volunteers into the fields to help us do it.

And then, at the end of a morning together, we get to see the result right in front of us.

A truck packed with fresh tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, watermelon, greens and whatever else the fields gave us that day. Food picked just hours before, grown specifically for our food pantry partners, and headed directly to the families they serve.

We care so much about the quality of what goes onto those trucks. We want it to be beautiful, fresh, nutrient-dense food that we would be excited to bring home to our own families.

Seeing those trucks full at the end of a shift is the best feeling. So many people cared about the food inside before it ever reached the person who will eat it.

It’s our favorite part, every single time.
