2 of my badass boys today at the Young Glory inter-squad matches today. Jack is following in Tyler's footsteps and having a great time with the U16 team.

Tyler is an alum of the U19 team and came back to referee his former team with two senior refs, Craig and Julian, as his Assistant Referees.

And I'm just a proud dad of what they've both achieved so far!

Very fun Fraine family rugby yesterday with Tyler as the center ref for a local men's D3 match and his brothers Jack and Ryan as the Assistant Referees. I gave support as the Ref Coach and Missy was the official videographer.

Tyler's been refereeing now for 7 years, Jack for 3, and Ryan was certified earlier this year. Saturday was definitely a Rugby Day!

It was a very active Saturday for 4 of our youth referees, all of it at Segra Field, the home of Old Glory DC.

Three of our referees rotated as a team of 3 for the three HS Girls Elite round robin matches between Vienna (VA), Knightmares (PA), and NC All-Stars, which were all curtain raiser matches for the OGDC and Seattle Seawolves match that evening.

This means that we had for 3 matches 30 HS girls players on the field being managed by 3 HS aged referees with all the adults on the sidelines and in the stands supporting these amazing youth athletes!

Our refs this day are all in High School, Tyler Fraine (Jr), Cole Bevilacqua (Fr), and Zach Hayes (Jr). While this crew is young in age, they have 14 years of refereeing experience between the 3 of them, so really a veteran crew.

Referee coach, Ken Fraine, acted as No. 4 and the entire crew had radio sets throughout the day.

Two of our youth refs, Tyler Fraine and Taylor Downer (Jr) have also been understudying with the MLR Technical Zone crew this season, which has been a fantastic learning experience for them, and they were on the sideline for the professional match that evening supporting as timekeeper and scoreboard operators.

DMV Area Coaches and Players,

Given the current number of referees available to the Potomac Referee Society, which serves the Rugby Virginia, DC Rugby, and Rugby Maryland teams many Middle School and HS matches are uncovered by the Society.

As you are already aware, many of our matches rely heavily on coaches and the occasional available certified referee to help. This is not sustainable and is hindering the development of the game.

YOUTH REFEREE PROGRAM

Potomac Referees have developed a very successful program to develop a team of young referees (aged 12 to 18) to cover MS and HS matches.

To increase the number of referees available for Youth matches, Roosters Rugby is hosting a Level 1 Referee Certification Course on January 8th at Georgetown Prep. Local referees and World Rugby Educators will be lead the course.

WHAT DO WE NEED?

We need players ages 12 to 18 years to become certified referees to cover our youth matches and our local clubs to promote this program.

WHAT CAN OUR YOUTH REFEREES EXPECT?
· Each newly certified referee will be supplied with a jersey, whistle, flags, and a scorecard wallet
· Senior level referees and Referee Coaches from Potomac will train Youth Referees and will be assigned matches in the upcoming season
· Certified Youth Referees are paid $75/match
HOW CAN I SIGN UP FOR THE PROGRAM?
