PAUL P. HARRIS, 1868-1947, launched the modern service club movement in 1905 when he organized the first Rotary club meeting in Chicago. His vision of an organization dedicated to peace, tolerance and serving others has allowed Rotary to service and thrive, well beyond Harris's own lifetime. HISTORY OF PURCELL ROTARY CLUB
Dating Bank to 1922

In March 1922 a group or Purcell business and professional individuals decided to organize a Rotary Club in Purcell, OK. In the first meeting the meal was furnished, cooked on a kerosene stove and served by two people, Mrs. E.C. Tuggle and Mrs. Floyd Tribby, in the basement of the Methodist Church. Over the next year they applied for charter with Rotary International and on March 30, 1923 the club was admitted to Rotary International, Charter No.1398 and sponsored by the Norman Rotary Club. Bert Faulkner was District Goerner at that time. Now a new record was set....the Purcell Rotary Club was the first Rotary Internarial in a town of less than 3,000 population.

Mary lived an amazing life and leaves a legacy of service that will ripple through our community for years. We are proud to have been her fellow Rotarians, and we extend our love and prayers to her family.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend, dedicated Rotarian, and Past District Governor, Mary Sherman.

Mary truly embodied Service Above Self. While many across Oklahoma knew her as a vision-driven District Governor, we knew her as a warm mentor and a passionate leader. Her legacy of service, quick wit, and endless kindness touched countless lives in Oklahoma and beyond.

Please join us in keeping Mary’s family and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Services will be Monday, 1:30 pm at McFarlin Methodist Church, 419 South University, Norman, OK.

Rest in peace, Mary. Your light and impact will never be forgotten. 🕯️💙

We loved honoring our Rotary cooks at this year's Heart of Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce banquet! Each year, we recognize a community member or organization that exemplifies the spirit of Service Above Self and award them our Paul Harris Non-Rotarian of the Year. This year, we recognized the group of individuals that work behind the scenes to literally fuel the efforts of all our Rotary activities in Purcell. If you've ever attended one of our meetings, you've tasted their delicious food, and we would not be the club we are without their quiet, dedicated service for so many years. Thank you, Rotary cooks!

Melissa Pruitt presents the Purcell Rotary Club’s 2026 Non-Rotarian of the Year Award to the Rotary Cooks.

The Rotary Cooks generously give their time and talents to support the club and its service throughout the community. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
