PAUL P. HARRIS, 1868-1947, launched the modern service club movement in 1905 when he organized the first Rotary club meeting in Chicago. His vision of an organization dedicated to peace, tolerance and serving others has allowed Rotary to service and thrive, well beyond Harris's own lifetime. HISTORY OF PURCELL ROTARY CLUB
Dating Bank to 1922
In March 1922 a group or Purcell business and professional individuals decided to organize a Rotary Club in Purcell, OK. In the first meeting the meal was furnished, cooked on a kerosene stove and served by two people, Mrs. E.C. Tuggle and Mrs. Floyd Tribby, in the basement of the Methodist Church. Over the next year they applied for charter with Rotary International and on March 30, 1923 the club was admitted to Rotary International, Charter No.1398 and sponsored by the Norman Rotary Club. Bert Faulkner was District Goerner at that time. Now a new record was set....the Purcell Rotary Club was the first Rotary Internarial in a town of less than 3,000 population.
