In late July, Troop 664 embarked on one of its first high adventure treks to Haleakalā Crater! Day 4: After spending the night in the Hōlua Cabin surrounded by the evening calls of the nesting ‘Ua‘u, or Hawaiian Petrel, we were greeted by a spectacular sunrise at the edge of the northern Ko‘olau Gap. We started out on the Halemau‘u Trail, beginning our roughly 4 mile, 1000-ft. ascent on a number of switchbacks up to the trailhead. Lunch at Kalei’s Lunchbox in Pukalani (so ‘ono), the obligatory stop at Krispy Kreme, then back to the airport for the flight home. Mahalo to all the Scouters and friends who provided support and guidance as we prepared for this amazing adventure, surely one these Scouts won’t soon forget!

In late July, Troop 664 embarked on one of its first high adventure treks to Haleakalā Crater! Day 3: The Troop headed out early the next morning on the Halemau‘u Trail, trekking back across the crater a little over 6 miles to the Hōlua Cabin on the drier, western edge of the crater. We hiked through a varied and other-worldly landscape, passing an area of vibrantly colored cinder known as “Pele’s Paint Pot.” Upon arriving at Hōlua , we were greeted by some friendly nēnē thirsty for water.

In late July, Troop 664 embarked on one of its first high adventure treks to Haleakalā Crater! Day 2: We started out on the Keonehe‘ehe‘e (Sliding Sands) Trail and trekked across the crater, nearly 9 miles, to overnight at the Palikū Cabin. There, we encountered a beautiful landscape on the wet, eastern side of the crater at the edge of the Ko‘olau Gap.

In late July, Troop 664 embarked on one of its first high adventure treks to the Haleakalā Crater on the Island of Maui! Day 1: Up early to catch our flight to Maui. Upon arrival, we rented our vans, then visited the ʻĪao Valley State Monument. The Scouts then toured the cultural displays at Kepaniwai Park & Heritage Gardens, and filled their water containers with some of the freshest water on Maui. We later traveled up the summit to prepare for our trek the next morning and acclimate overnight at the Hosmer Grove Campground. While there, we took the short Hosmer Grove Trail to try and spot native birds fluttering around the intact native shrublands.
