PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Mahoning Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 2076 and the family of the late Army Sgt. 1st Class Scott R. Smith, who died July 17, 2006, in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, recently debuted a new Phantastic Phil in his memory. The full story appears in the Monday April 5th edition of The Spirit. Next Tuesday is which means Facebook will match any donations you make to support our cause.

This will go a long way to close our fundraising gap since we didn't do an event this year.

Today we remember and honor our Veterans.

And for all the other days we couldn’t think of a better Punxsutawney way to do it than a Phantastic Phil statue.

Be on the lookout for Veteran Phil.

Special thanks to The Kyrie Gallery for the design and creation.

A message to our supporters:

2020 continues to be challenging - for all of us. We understand you may be facing new obstacles and making tough decisions.

Because of that, we’ve decided to eliminate the motorcycle ride and car show that are the major fundraising events for our scholarship. We may schedule smaller online fundraisers for the 2020-2021 SFC Scott Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund at a later date.

This scholarship was established to help people who share our belief that one person can make a difference. Right now, so many people are filling that role: from health care workers to teachers to essential workers, there are folks all over the country tirelessly working to make changes to the world as we know it.

We hope that by freeing up the funds you may have put toward our cause, you may support organizations in your community that need it now more than ever.

The world will settle on its axis again, and we’ll reboot the efforts of this scholarship fund. Until then, be safe and God bless. And as always, thank you for your support.
