Our Mission: Saving Lives by Ending Rabies
Our mission is to eliminate r

abies as a cause of human suffering and death in Africa. Through innovative research, smartphone-based dog identification, and community-led vaccination programs, we’re scaling up lifesaving rabies control efforts and building sustainable solutions that can work across the continent. Our Vision: A World Without Rabies
A future where nobody dies from rabies—a preventable disease we’ve known how to control for more than a century.

Giving back can take many forms — and this weekend, it’s a 5K.

Members of WSU’s Rabies Free Africa team have already laced up and hit the pavement in support of the Run Wild! Rabies Free Africa 5K, a virtual run taking place May 22–25. The event was inspired by veterinarian Dr. Ana McIntosh of Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital after traveling to Tanzania and experiencing WSU’s Rabies Free Africa program firsthand.

Participants can run or walk from anywhere while supporting efforts to eliminate a virus that is entirely preventable, yet still claims thousands of human and animal lives each year. Participants can also earn performance T-shirts, handmade bracelets from Maasai women in Africa, and prizes for top finishers. During , we’re highlighting the power of vaccines to prevent diseases like rabies — a disease that is 100% preventable and yet still claims thousands of lives each year.

Through Free Africa, Washington State University is working to stop rabies at its source by vaccinating dogs across East Africa. And thanks to creative supporter Lynne Shaw, handcrafted items are helping fund those lifesaving vaccinations. Every effort brings us one step closer to a rabies-free future.

Inspired by her experience in Tanzania assisting with WSU’s Rabies Free Africa program, Dr. Ana McIntosh of Polo Springs Veterinary Hospital created the Run Wild! Rabies Free Africa 5K, a virtual event happening May 22–25. Walk, run, or participate from anywhere while supporting life-saving rabies prevention efforts in East Africa. Proceeds and donations will go directly to support Rabies Free Africa and the life-saving work in communities that need it most. Thanks to generous support from Boehringer Ingelheim covering the expense for prizes, shirts, and bracelets, money raised will directly benefit the program. 💉🐾 More than a decade ago, Dr. Guy Palmer helped launch Rabies Free Africa with a bold but simple goal: eliminate rabies by focusing on mass dog vaccination and sustainable local partnerships in East Africa. What began as a vision has grown into a model program—uniting researchers, veterinarians, students, and communities in Tanzania and Kenya around a shared commitment to prevention.

Today, Rabies Free Africa has surpassed 3 million dog vaccinations, dramatically reducing human rabies deaths and strengthening veterinary infrastructure in the regions it serves.

Dr. Palmer’s leadership laid the foundation, but the work continues—driven by community collaboration, science, and the belief that rabies is a disease we have the tools to end.
