Don't miss this special exhibit at the Libey Gallery in the Whitman County Library in Colfax!

On display through June, the exhibit features vibrant artwork by Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) students in grades K–12, along with three hand-carved paddles created by Nez Perce elders A. K. Scott and Bill Wheeler Jr. (Choc Wheeler).

The artwork reflects the deep cultural connections between the Nimiipuu people, buffalo, wildlife, and the Tribe's Treaty of 1855 "Usual and Accustomed Places."

Through art, these young artists share stories of stewardship, cultural continuity, and caring for the lands and traditions that have sustained their people for generations.
The League of Women Voters of Pullman is honored to help share this meaningful display with our community.

Stop by the library this month and experience these inspiring works before the exhibit closes at the end of June.

The keynote speaker at the June 2026 LWVWA Council Meeting in Lacey, Washington, was G. Helen Whitener.

Justice Whitener is the first Black woman to serve on the Washington State Supreme Court, the fourth immigrant-born justice on the court, and the first Black LGBTQIA+ state supreme court justice in both Washington and the nation. She also identifies as a person with a disability.

Her presentation offered a refreshing perspective on diversity, reminding us that our unique experiences, backgrounds, and life journeys strengthen our organizations and communities. Her message was both inspiring and thought-provoking, highlighting the value of ensuring that many voices and perspectives are represented at the table.

Now on Display: Nimiipuu Youth Artwork and Cultural Traditions

Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) student artwork from grades K–12 is now on display at the Libey Gallery in the Whitman County Library in Colfax through the month of June.

In addition, three hand carved paddles are included in this display. They were carved by Nez Perce elders A. K. Scott and Bill Wheeler, Jr. (Choc Wheeler).

In 2025, the Nez Perce Tribe General Membership adopted a resolution to develop and manage a Nimiipuu Buffalo Program. This vibrant artwork reflects the deep cultural connection between the Nimiipuu people, the buffalo, and the other wildlife within the Tribe’s Treaty of 1855 “Usual and Accustomed Places.”

Through stewardship, conservation, and cultural continuity, the Nimiipuu people continue working to help ensure these “Usual and Accustomed Places”are cared for and protected for future generations to hunt, fish, gather, and maintain these important traditions.

We invite the community to stop by and experience these meaningful works of art.

The League of Women Voters of Pullman is honored to cohost this display, along with the Nimiipuu Protecting the Environment group and the Libey Gallery at the Whitman County Library. The League is grateful for the opportunity to support the sharing of Nimiipuu youth artwork, culture, and traditions with the broader community.
