There’s something special about giving something broken a second chance!

Meet Pete Huber, a Calfee Center volunteer helping us bring our upcoming Repair Café to life! As Pete reminds us, the real value of repairing isn't just fixing what's broken. It's about sharing knowledge, learning from one another, and building community.

Join us on Saturday, October 24, from 10 AM–2 PM for a FREE community event where experienced volunteers will help troubleshoot and repair everyday household items, including clothing, small furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, toys, and more!

But you don't have to bring something broken to participate! Stop by for a cup of coffee, learn a new skill, lend a helping hand, or simply connect with your neighbors.

Location: Calfee Center, 1 Corbin-Harmon Drive, Pulaski, VA

Please bring items for repair between 10 AM and 12 PM.

The countdown is on! Only 11 days until our Repair Café!

Have something at home that needs a little TLC? Before you toss it, bring it to the Calfee Center!

On Saturday, October 24, our community volunteers will be on hand to help troubleshoot and repair everyday household items. From small appliances to clothing and more, the Repair Café is all about giving our belongings a second life, reducing waste, and bringing our community together.

Once again, we are so proud of Kamille Simon! 💜💛

Kamille has been named the recipient of the 2026 Excellence in Student Community Engagement Award from the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, recognizing her work with the 23/54 Project’s Quilt Monument during her time as a Virginia Tech undergraduate and Calfee Center research fellow.

Kamille’s dedication to preserving and sharing our community’s history continues to make an impact, and we are incredibly grateful for all she has contributed to the Calfee Center and the 23/54 Project.

Happy World Teachers’ Day from the Calfee Center! 💜 Today, we celebrate the many wonderful educators whose impact reaches beyond the classroom.

We’re sharing a glimpse of that legacy through a 1976 article featuring beloved educator Ms. Irene Morrison. During a celebration at Central United Methodist Church, she portrayed Mary McLeod Bethune, sharing a message about the importance of education for Black children, a reminder of how teaching, church life, and community history intersect.

What can happen when we think about sport as more than a game? 🏀⚽

Join Dr. Tiesha Martin, Associate Professor of Health and Human Performance at Radford University, for a public talk exploring Sport for Development—using sport to promote connection, social change, health, and stronger communities.

A new partner of the Calfee Center, Dr. Martin will be collaborating with us through efforts such as collecting and telling local stories at the intersection of sports and race.

During the talk, she’ll highlight a Sport for Development program she is currently implementing with partners in Radford City and explore how this work is being put into practice locally.

Happy Fire Prevention Month! 🚒🔥

We kicked off the month with a very special visit from the Pulaski Fire Department! Our children were VERY excited to welcome our local firefighters, learn more about fire safety, and get an up-close look at the important work they do to keep our community safe.

A huge thank you to the Pulaski Fire Department for taking time out of their day to visit with our children and make the start of Fire Prevention Month so memorable! ❤️🚒

Wednesday Rewind ⏪💜

Whew! Today was a busy day at the Calfee Center and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

We started the morning by welcoming Michael Parks’ Criminal Justice class to Calfee to learn more about Brown v. Board of Education and its connection to the historic Calfee Training School and the fight for educational equality here in Pulaski.

Later, our team had the opportunity to visit the Lifelong Learning crew at Warm Hearth and share Stitched Together, our documentary highlighting the families and history behind the 1947 Corbin et al. v. County School Board of Pulaski County case.

And we wrapped up the day with the kickoff of our very first Tech & Learn workshop! A huge thank-you to our partners with the REACH Lab and Virginia Tech Department of Computer Science volunteers for stepping up to lead our first session and help make technology a little more accessible for our community.

From preserving our history, to sharing our stories, to building new skills for the future, it was a full Wednesday at Calfee. 💜💛
