WHAT DOES FILLING THE BOOT ACTUALLY DO?
Soon, you’ll see firefighters out collecting donations for MDA. Before we ask you to donate, we want you to know what your dollars help make possible.
For 75 years, MDA has worked to improve the lives of children and adults living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and other neuromuscular diseases.
🔬 $1.1+ BILLION invested in research
🧬 30+ FDA-approved treatments in the past decade
🩺 Specialized care through MDA’s nationwide Care Center Network
❤️ MDA Summer Camp and programs connecting kids and families
📣 Advocacy for better access, resources, and opportunities
And today, some of that work hits especially close to home for the fire service.
🚒 Research suggests firefighters may face nearly twice the risk of developing ALS compared with the general population. MDA is supporting research aimed at understanding why, including the potential roles of occupational and environmental exposures, genetics, and lifestyle.
For firefighters, this 72-year partnership isn’t only about carrying on a tradition. The research we help fund may someday provide answers that directly impact our own brothers and sisters in the fire service.
Firefighters have raised more than $721 MILLION through the IAFF and MDA partnership.
Last year alone, 846 IAFF Locals raised $10.7 million.
When you see a Local 3 firefighter with a boot in hand, know that every dollar dropped inside helps support research, care, community, and advocacy.
One boot. A few dollars at a time. 72 years of making a difference. 🥾
Our members will be out starting this Tuesday to Labor Day at store fronts and intersections through out our district. If you see us, please stop by and say hello. If you would like to make a donation we will gladly accepts on behalf of MDA.
