What if there’s an emergency and you are not with your family? Would you know how to get a hold of them to find out if they were safe? Would you know where you could reunite, if needed? What happens if cell phone services or the internet goes down due to an emergency? Sometimes texting is best. Creating a communication plan for your family now will help to alleviate the stress and worry if an emergency occurs. Determine how you will reach your family members and where you will meet up with them should you be separated. Include in your plan the names and contact information for all your family members, doctors, schools and other providers, such as daycare centers, designate an emergency meeting spot in your home, neighborhood or outside your neighborhood. Share your plan and then practice it. Be Ready, Be Prepared.

For some emergencies, you may be told not to leave your home. If you are required to stay in your home, do you know how to properly shelter-in-place, particularly in the event of a hazardous chemical situation or a weather emergency. Know where to go in your home, place of employment or other location and what to do if you are asked to shelter in place. Make a shelter-in-place plan and practice it with your family and co-workers. You should identify a room in your home to shelter-in-place and designate where you can hide if need be and make a shelter in place kit to include duct tape, plastic (to seal off doors and windows), a radio, spare batteries, bottled water, flashlight and non-perishable food items. Practice your plans regularly and remember in all instances, remain in the shelter until you are instructed it’s safe to leave.

If you have to evacuate your home, would you know where to go? When evacuations are required, emergency management/responders will usually designate a reception area or shelter for those who must leave their homes/businesses. To find out where a shelter is located, tune in to your local emergency broadcast radio/TV station and follow the social media from your local emergency management, law enforcement, First Responders, etc. If you have pets, find out if the shelter location will accept pets. Don’t forget to take your 72-hour emergency kit with you. Be Ready, Be Prepared.

Knowing when and how to safely evacuate during an emergency is critical. Planning for evacuation starts now. Make a plan on how you and your family will leave your home, your neighborhood and your city, if required. Include alternate ways to leave your home and now different paths out of your neighborhood and city should streets, roads, bridges, etc be blocked or closed due to the emergency. Make a location where you and your family can reunite should you be separated during evacuation. Remember to pack a 72-hour kit and have it ready to go with you, should you need to leave your home. Be Prepared, Be Ready

One of the first steps to getting prepared for emergencies is to know what hazards or disasters could affect your area. If you know what potential disasters can occur, then you can plan and better prepare for the emergency. Make a family emergency plan that takes into consideration each hazard and practice your plan. Be Prepared, Be Ready.

Getting timely and accurate information during an emergency is critical to saving lives. One of the easiest and fastest ways to get that information is through emergency alerts that come straight to your cell phone. Emergency managers and first responders can designate specific areas that are affected by the emergency and send alerts and notifications via a text or voice message. The alerts and notifications provide critical information on actions you should take such as whether to shelter-in-place or evacuate. It can provide important information such as weather information, imminent threats and local incident information targeted to a specific area. But you won’t receive that information on your phone, unless you have it registered. If you haven’t registered your phone, do it today. Today is the start of National Preparedness Month. This year’s campaign will focus on preparing older adults for disasters as they can face greater risks when it comes to extreme weather events and emergencies, especially if they live alone, are low-income, have a disability or live in rural areas. While the focus this year is on preparing older adults, the message can apply to everyone. Be Prepared, Be Ready.

With the completion of the destruction of the chemical stockpile at the Pueblo Chemical depot, the CSEPP (Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program) will be sunsetting after three decades of providing emergency preparedness and response to the Pueblo community. CSEPP has made Pueblo County better prepared to respond to any type of emergency and we, as a community, will continue to do so after CSEPP officially ends. Pueblo County, in collaboration with local municipalities and special districts, is updating the 2017 Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. The term "Hazard Mitigation" describes actions that can help reduce or eliminate long-term risks caused by hazards, such as floods and wildfires.
Residents, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to contribute to the planning process. What hazards do you think the County should focus on?
Take a brief survey at www.bit.ly/PuebloHMP_HazardRisk
Benefits of this project include: ensuring eligibility for mitigation grant funding, increasing public awareness of hazards, and identifying a mitigation strategy for reducing future losses.
Stay tuned for upcoming public surveys and project engagement opportunities.

June 22, 2023 – What a historical day!
It’s been a long time coming but our community can now check this risk off our list. Huge round of applause to the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Plan staff (current and past), Pueblo County Sheriff’s Emergency Management, the PCSO staff, area fire agencies, the Citizen’s Advisory Commission, state and federal partners, the Pueblo Chemical Agent – Destruction Pilot Plant, Pueblo Chemical Depot and all stakeholders who have watched out and prepared for the safety of Pueblo County residents and visitors for more than three decades as the process was started to destroy the 2,613 tons of agent. We celebrate and congratulate all involved in safely getting this mission accomplished.

Extreme cold weather is on the way later this week. Dangerously cold temperatures are forecast for Pueblo and the region from Wednesday night through Friday morning. Thursday will be the coldest day of this spell with the high temperature forecast to be in the single digits and the low is forecast to be minus-14, however, the wind chill is expected to make the temperature even colder. Prepare now for the extreme cold. Limit time outdoors as frostbite/hypothermia can occur quickly in extremely cold temperatures. Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Don’t use gas stoves or ovens to heat your home and never use a generator or grill indoors. Be safe.
