PAWS For Life – Animal Welfare & Protection Society began in 1978 with the collective actions of eight individuals who saw the need, in Pueblo, to provide help and aid to abandoned, abused and unwanted companion animals. Care for animals was provided strictly through a foster home system but it quickly became obvious that the foster home system was limited. Large numbers of adoptable animals were

still left to die in the streets or were subject to disposal at taxpayers’ expense. Pritz donated land at 3420 West 8th Street (off Pueblo Boulevard and 11th Street) and a shelter facility was built. This is where the current shelter still remains. In 1981 the PAWS For Life – Animal Welfare and Protection Society was incorporated in the state of Colorado as a non-profit organization and is recognized as a 501(c)(3) corporation by the Internal Revenue Service. PAWS For Life soon established a policy based on population control and adoption as alternatives to euthanasia and the organization began a campaign to focus public awareness on the increasing needs of helpless and homeless animals. In response to this, contributions from the public enabled us to construct a small, 10 run kennel. The shelter later expanded to 16 indoor access runs and four outside runs. In 2001 the shelter underwent a renovation project that made the shelter safer and healthier for dogs and staff and brought it into compliance with PACFA regulations. Our shelter presently has 26 runs and houses between 50 and 60 dogs at any one time. With donations from individuals and businesses, fundraising activities and an occasional grant as our only means of support we have been able to care for and adopt out several thousand animals into good homes.

🐾 FOSTERS NEEDED 🐾

Friends, we are in need of foster homes.
Every day, we receive calls from people needing help with animals, but without available space, we simply can’t say yes. Foster families are one of the most important ways we can save more lives.

Opening your home to a foster pet gives them a break from shelter life while creating space for another animal in need. It’s a lifesaving gift that provides comfort, love, and a chance to decompress.

We currently need fosters for seniors, bottle babies, puppies, pets with medical needs, and shy animals who would benefit from extra socialization and the comfort of a home environment.

We also have several bonded pairs who have lost the only homes they’ve ever known, and we’d love to keep them together while they wait for their forever families. Whether you can help for a few weeks or longer, you can make a tremendous difference.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Gypsy! 🎉

Today, all Gypsy wants for her birthday is a forever home.

As one of our longest-term residents, this sweet Boxer/Pit Bull mix has spent far too long waiting for a family to call her own. Despite that, she continues to greet each day with her silly personality, lovable quirks, and a heart full of hope.

Gypsy is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. She loves making friends but prefers to do things at her own pace. Once she trusts you, you’ll discover a loyal companion who will keep you smiling with her goofy antics and affectionate nature.

She is looking for a calm home with children 16 and older, plenty of patience, and lots of treats. Gypsy has made great progress with her social skills and enjoys her walks, though all the exciting sights and sounds can sometimes get her a little overstimulated. Because she has a high prey drive, a home without cats would be best.

This birthday, our wish for Gypsy is simple: a loving family and a place to finally call home.

Update on Cricket and Beetle-

I wanted to share an update on Maverick (Cricket) and Goose (Beetle). They are the best boys ever, and we are so happy with them. I think (hope) they feel the same. Yeager is a one-year-old Cattle Dog mix bursting with energy, intelligence, and personality. This handsome boy is always ready for action and would thrive in an active home that can keep both his body and mind engaged.

Like many Cattle Dogs, Yeager is incredibly smart and eager to learn. He’s currently working with our trainer, Dora, and is doing great learning stay, leave it, sit, and other basic skills using positive reinforcement. He truly enjoys training and is the kind of dog who will shine with continued structure, enrichment, and a job to do.

Yeager is dog friendly and absolutely loves playing with his best friend, Quinnie, here at the shelter. He enjoys having a canine companion but will still need proper introductions and guidance as he continues to learn good manners.

He is still working on his potty training, so he’ll need a patient home committed to helping him succeed. With the right leadership and outlets for his energy, Yeager is going to make an incredibly loyal and fun companion.
