We asked our amazing Facebook community for your top Medicare fraud prevention tips for Medicare Fraud Prevention Week. Your enthusiastic responses highlighted one of the easiest and most effective ways to spot and prevent fraud, errors, or abuse: "Study your EOBs!"

Let’s break it down. EOB stands for Explanation of Benefits, if you have a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Original Medicare has a version called the Medicare Summary Notice (MSN). They provide a summary of the services and items you received and how much you were billed.

Here are a few quick tips to help you detect potential fraud, errors, or abuse:

• Review your EOBs/MSNs regularly and check for unfamiliar charges or services you didn’t receive.
• Report anything suspicious to Medicare right away.
• Keep track of your medical appointments and compare them to your statements.
• Don’t share your Medicare number with anyone you don’t trust.

If you’ve had trouble getting errors corrected or think you may have been defrauded, the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program is here to help. SMP staff and volunteers can answer your questions, help you resolve billing issues, and guide you through the steps to report suspected fraud, errors, or abuse.
