Let me tell you about myself and answer some of what I feel are the most pressing questions around my campaign for Sheriff.
1. Why did I decide to jump into the race at this time?
I am running for Sheriff because I believe every voter in Pueblo County deserves a choice this November. As it stands today, many residents have not had the opportunity to weigh in on who will serve as their next Sheriff, and we all know primary election turnout is often limited.
After the Democratic primary results came in, I had friends and leaders from both sides of the aisle reach out and encourage me to run. I want to offer the people of Pueblo County an option backed by education, professionalism, and decades of experience in leadership.
Under my command, the Sheriff’s office will build on the stability and statewide reputation we are known for while focusing on where this office needs to go next.
2. Where do you stand on labor unions?
I believe our deputies and the union that represents them are the backbone of the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
While I have great respect for Sheriff Lucero and his service, I would have approached union negotiations differently by making it a priority to reach a fair contract as quickly as possible.
I am committed to respecting the health, safety, and overall wellbeing of every Sheriff’s Office employee under my command. That includes honoring their right to collectively bargain for fair wages, benefits, and working conditions.
I have every intention of reaching out to labor organizations throughout the community and proving my commitment to their cause.
3. Are you a Forging Pueblo candidate?
To put it plainly, no. I am not a Forging Pueblo candidate.
My Christian faith is at the core of who I am. It has shaped my personal life and my career, and it guides values I try to live by every day: integrity, humility, compassion, and service to others. But my faith is mine. It is not a platform, and it is not a test I would apply to anyone else, whether that is a resident, a deputy, or an inmate.
I am not seeking the backing of any group that asks candidates to govern by a particular worldview or ties support to a religious litmus test. No church, no pastor, no advocacy group writes my policy or picks my staff.
I answer to the Constitution and the laws of Colorado. Pueblo is home to a diverse group of religious denominations who are respected and protected under their constitutional right of religious freedom. Believers and non-believers alike make our community beautiful. As Sheriff, my job is to apply the law the same way to every citizen, religious views notwithstanding.
