Statement from the International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local 537 (IBPO 537) Pueblo Police Officers Union

We, the officers of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local 537, proudly stand in full support of Kala Beauvais for Pueblo County District Attorney. Our union believes in leaders who uphold justice, fairness, and integrity, and we are confident that Kala Beauvais embodies these values.

To be clear, IBPO Local 537 represents the men and women of the Pueblo Police Department. We are not the same as IBPO 837, which represents the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office and has endorsed Democratic candidates Kyle Aber and Daneya Esgar. We stand independently in our commitment to endorsing candidates who we believe will best serve the people of Pueblo County, and we firmly believe that Kala Beauvais is the right choice for District Attorney.

Our support for Kala Beauvais is unwavering. We encourage the community to join us in voting for a leader who will prioritize safety, accountability, and justice for all.

IBPO Local 537 – Pueblo Police Officers Union

📣📣Mayoral Election Update📣📣📣

Recently there have been candidates making some extreme claims. We want to dispel some of these claims. The Mayors office doesn’t have anything to do with auto theft. The state legislature makes the rules and is the law when it comes to the final say of what is allowed and what isn’t. The Mayors office can’t run drug dealers out of town. Our Officers and Detectives are working diligently to fight the drug problem. We do our best to charge dealers federally because they get more time and will do more time than at the state level. Officers have tried to get a Sit, Lie, Stand ordinance passed to deal with the homeless issues in the City and Council wouldn’t approve it. We have also asked about an ordinance to ban camping in the City and the current Mayor will not endorse that proposal.

Remember to vote Heather Graham for Mayor on November 7th! The City needs a change in Leadership.

Recently the International Brotherhood of Police Officers Local #537 have been discussing if we as a union wanted to back a candidate for Mayor. We usually refrain from this but with what has happened over the past year we felt it may be time we spoke out as a union.

We sent out a survey to our membership asking two questions:
First do you want the union to publicly back a candidate for mayor.

Second if yes then who do you want to back.

All 9 candidates were on the survey and Heather Graham was the candidate who was the overwhelming choice of the members who voted.

Not just because of the money and quartermaster given to us but more importantly she has continued to fight in council for local rules to assist the police officers in doing their jobs.

-Over the last 21 months on Council, Heather has been an advocate for Public Safety.

- Last Election Cycles Heather successfully lead the charge of the 2B Public Safey Tax Campaign. The Public Safety Tax pays for the officers to have the best equipment and an additional 22 Officers on the street. The tax passed with and overwhelming amount of more then 75%

-To help the officers do their Job Heather tried to pass a NO Sit, No Lie ordinance in the downtown area to give the Police Department one more tool to help mitigate the homeless crisis facing the City of Pueblo. This ordinance would have allowed the Officers to make contact with unhoused population camping in the downtown area and move them along. This ordinance failed 4-3.

-Heather proposed, and wrote a Merchant Theft Ordinance that now allows the Police Officers to issue a ticket to anyone who steals $300 or more from any Merchant in the City, the mandatory sentencing is 3 days in Jail for this citation. Before this ordinance the limit for theft in the city was the same at the state $2000.00. If an offender if picked up 3 times on this Ordinance they also have to go straight to jail. This allows the officers to actually pick up criminals stealing from stores.

-Earlier this year the Police Union came to Heather with concerns on the amount of officers we were losing to other departments in the state. YTD we are down 56 officers. Some solutions that came from the Union would be to make it more attractable in the City of Pueblo to be a police officer here. Having their uniforms paid for was one of the solutions. Time and time again Heather brought this idea to the Mayor, and City Council who were reluctant to bring in a Quartermaster system. After several months, with push backs and meetings the council agreed to grant the ask. The Union wanted to look at a pay raise of 10% in which the Mayor was not in favor of. Heather, City Council, and the Police Union worked together and at the very least we're able to offer a $10,000 retention bonus to the officers. This was given out of ARPA funds to show the cities need and to show the appreciation to our Police Officers.

So going forward we the IBPO #537 are in full support of Heather Graham for Mayor of the City of Pueblo.

Signed
Jimmie Quintana
President
