Another way to cultivate a connection with your child through writing is to have a family notebook! A family notebook allows for both you and your child to engage in conversation that sparks creativity, laughter, and connection.

To get started with your family notebook, find a notebook with plenty of pages and choose a consistent writing location with comfortable seating where pens and pencils are readily available. Make sure everyone is aware of the notebook’s location and encourage them to write in it at least a couple of times a week. You can initiate conversation by asking questions or commenting on a previous entry in the notebook.

Don’t know what to write about in your family notebook? Start a story chain! Story chains are an excellent way to create funny, original stories with your family. To begin the chain, one family member starts the story by writing the first few lines and then each family member takes turns adding to the story until it comes to a natural end.

A family notebook fosters collaboration between you and your child and can serve as a keepsake for you to look back on in the future!
