NINTH STREET WOMEN is a two hour art-making create-a-thon taught by Laura Shabott. Students will select an artist from Mary Gabriel’s Ninth Street Women book to be your muse; for example: Lee Krasner, Elaine De Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, or Joan Mitchell. You will create your own art in reaction and response to your selected artist. To prepare, you will choose paint, collage, drawing, video or film as your medium (or a mixed media combination).

For those of you who want to respond with prose or with poetry along with visual, or with written words only, all forms of expression are welcome. Register here:

Experiment with the poetic deployment of space in an upcoming workshop with former poet laureate of Philadelphia, Airea D. Matthews!

“The Visual Poem” is a generative workshop that will equip students with a heightened understanding of line, syntax, diction, stanza, and visual grammar. By the end of the workshop, participants will understand how to visually render the logical, emotional and political spheres of their work, using nothing more than the page, their words, and their imagination.

Airea D. Matthews is the author of Simulacra, which won the 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, and Bread and Circus, which won the 2024 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry. Her honors include a Guggenheim, a Rona Jaffe award, and fellowships from the Academy of American Poets and Cave Canem. Matthews' work has appeared in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Times, and Best American Poets.
