The Partnership For Community Progress

The Partnership For Community Progress “A community action group dedicated to black and brown progress throughout Rhode Island” We will post our events and information on these pages.

In the past, there had been a Black History Month Committee that would plan events throughout the month of February but they have been inactive for many years. Last year, a group of young professionals, along with various community youth organizations and churches decided to pick up where they left off. Our intention was to educate youth and adults about the tremendous contributions African-Americ

ans have made in every facet of life—from science to music to athletics. We also aim to bring awareness to the state of the black community, particularly in Woonsocket, recognize the black owned businesses here in the city, inspire more young adults to become involved in their community, and “piggy backing” on the spirit of events held during the weekend of the 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, we hope to forge a more unified City with a primary focus on the development of ALL youth. Black History Month 2012 in Woonsocket was filled with a host of fun and engaging activities for all ages including: history presentations, a film screening, a black trivia competition, a trip to the JFK Library in Boston to attend an African dance and drumming presentation, and a captivating community forum which brought attention to many of the social and political issues we are currently faced with in Woonsocket, that we can and MUST come together on to bring about change for a better community and more promising future for our youth. Although February is the only month deemed Black History Month, this was just the beginning of the continuation of a lifelong Celebration. The group will continue to be active, throughout the year, hosting more activities and events which will highlight the work and achievements of African-Americans, and other minorities, both nationally and locally. For any events held that require a fee, the monies will be used to help support Black History Month for the following year and to support other community initiatives. If you would like to learn more or you are interested in joining the group and you’re willing to work, can be accountable, and sincerely would like to make a difference in your community, then email us at: [email protected]

WOONSOCKET Family!

In honor of Black History Month, I invite you to help us celebrate and preserve Black History right here in Woonsocket, RI.

Please share any photos, newspaper articles, or memories highlighting Black excellence in our city — past or present. Whether it’s educators, athletes, pastors, entrepreneurs, community leaders, or everyday trailblazers, their stories matter.

We often think of the greats — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Harriet Tubman, and others. But we don’t have to look far… we have greatness right here at home.

🖤 Our goal is to collect and curate these stories for a future community exhibit and/or program that honors Black history in Woonsocket. Your contribution can help ensure these legacies are preserved and shared with the next generation.

📸 Drop photos in the comments or send them via message
📰 Articles, names, and memories are welcome too!

Let’s honor the past, celebrate the present, and build something meaningful for the future — together.
