Last fall, JWU’s ECO Office partnered with .climate.solutions for a campus walkthrough with Samantha Salvatore, a waste reduction consultant from CET. During the visit, we highlighted JWU’s sustainability initiatives, including our eco-friendly takeout containers, three-bin Max-R waste systems, composting programs, the Wildcat Food Rescue initiative, and our plastic recycling partnership with Trex. We also shared our ongoing efforts as a Bee Campus and Tree Campus affiliate. 🐝🌳♻️

Our ECO Team member of the week is Chloe! She is pursuing a Sustainable Food Systems degree with a background in Baking and Pastry Arts while double minoring in Environmental Sustainability and Political Science. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, watching tv, gardening, cooking, and playing Mario Kart with friends. She is also on the board for Student Activists Supporting Sustainability (SASS) and is very excited about the things they have planned for this upcoming year.

Her interest in sustainability has always been a part of her life, growing up surrounded by gardens and the natural world, largely due to her parents. Her interest grew when she took an environmental science class in high school, which carried on to JWU, where she joined SASS her freshman year and made connections with its other members.

Her favorite parts about working at ECO are working in the gardens, recycling electronic waste, and working with fellow team members during waste audits. She enjoys working with others who are also interested in all of the various subcategories of sustainability - it inspires her to be more conscious of her decisions and enables her to learn more about different topics regarding sustainable practices.

Her experience at ECO in combination with taking culinary labs has helped her to realize how food scraps can always be utilized. She is always looking for ways to reuse items such as food containers, or save food scraps to include into other meals (while advocating for others to do the same).

Thank you for being an inspiring, hard-working part of ECO, Chloe!

Sammy is our ECO Team Member of the Week this week! He is a senior in Health Science on track to becoming a Physical Therapist. In his spare time, he loves to hike, rock climb, watch hockey, and go to concerts.

He became interested in sustainability in his past work in microplastics. Growing up in Alaska, he realized his state was at the end of the supply chain, accumulating a lot of plastic waste and having no where to send it. Because of this issue, he was driven to work independently as well as on a team which focused on individual and larger microplastic- related projects. Through research and findings on these projects, he was able to present at the second International Symposium on Plastics in the Arctic and Subarctic as well as the NASA Division of Student Research. He also brought his findings to his DEE last year, which became a catalyst for the implementation of takeout containers at the all-you-care-to-eat dining halls.

His favorite part about ECO so far has been the ability to work in the gardens and get his hands dirty. He’s helped greatly with campus clean outs and has also co-founded a rock climbing club at JWU in order to promote healthy bodies and minds while connecting with nature and the greater Providence community.

Thanks for all you do for ECO and our planet, Sammy!

Our ECO Team member of the week is Jo! She is graduating in 2027 as a Sustainable Food Systems Major. In her spare time, she likes to read, garden, go to the beach, go on runs, and bake. Her favorite movie is The Lorax, and she also just got back from study abroad in Italy!

She first became interested in sustainability because she cares about the future, and she recognizes that the choices we make today about food, waste, energy, and consumption directly influence future generations.

Her favorite part about working at ECO is being able to make a difference and seeing change within the JWU community. She also loves working in the gardens.

Jo is on the board of and has helped run their events and meetings throughout the academic year, and she is helping to maintain the Green Collaborative gardens over the summer. She is also the official “Tree Warden,” a position that ensures our continued collaborations and efforts in planting trees on and off campus.

Thank you for all your continued hard work at ECO, Jo!

The ECO Team Member of the Week is Li! She is a Senior in the Interdisciplinary program studying Sustainable Supply Chain Management with a focus in Zero Waste Management. In her spare time, she likes to play Mario Kart and watch baseball and tv with her friends. She also enjoys backpacking, camping, fishing, and climbing in the summer months, as well as snowboarding in the winter.

She became interested in sustainability because she is very passionate about waste and the sustainable disposal or reuse of consumer goods and food. She initially wanted to work for ECO after her friend, and now coworker, explained to her how our waste audits ran and how they help keep JWU sustainable. Now, her favorite part about working at the office is the fact that each task offers a completely different experience. The waste audits, Move Out and Donate, and the Surplus Sale are great opportunities for her to connect with and educate her peers. Furthermore, working in the gardens gives her the opportunity to steward something that is completely student-led while allowing her to connect with nature.

She’s contributed an abundance of knowledge in her passion for backyard community composting and vermicast composting, which further fosters a regenerative culture within the gardens and further closes the food cycle on campus. Li is currently interning with and to learn more about compost education, recycling legislation, and non-profit compliance.

Thank you for all your hard work, passion and dedication to ECO, Li!
