A huge thank you to The New York Times - Travel for featuring our great city in their renowned 36 Hours series. Inspired by their spotlight, The Providence Foundation is proud to be putting our own spin on 36 Hours in Providence.

Whether it's catching the latest show at the The Providence Performing Arts Center or strolling with friends on the Michael S Van Leesten Memorial Pedestrian Bridge, this city has so much to offer our community.

This recognition is a reflection of every resident, neighbor, and small business owner who shows up for Providence with dedication and pride. You are what makes this city extraordinary, and you have always deserved to be celebrated.

The best discoveries happen when you have no agenda.

Downtown Providence has that rare quality: the kind of place where you wander in for one thing and leave with a story. As May comes to a close, we’re celebrating the small businesses that make that possible.

When small business employees can get to work on time and customers can easily reach Downtown Providence, is when EVERYONE wins.

The Providence Foundation is advocating for a funded RIPTA system and an urban district transit center near Providence Station that works for employees, small businesses, and its visitors.

Providence beats Manhattan in restaurants and bars per capita... no, really.

This Small Business Month, we’re walking Washington Street to introduce you to the people behind it — starting with Matt Simmons at Clementine Cocktail Bar .

Directly across from Trinity Repertory Company, next door to GraciesProv & Ten Prime Seafood , and somehow still the best-kept secret on the block, Clementine is the kind of place the regulars found first and never stopped coming back to. Craft cocktails, good food, and a room designed to make you forget you had somewhere else to be.

Matt has watched something shift downtown over the years. Residents signing leases. Neighbors choosing to stay. Dollars cycling back into the city instead of leaving it. And businesses like Clementine are a big reason why.

The question isn’t whether Downtown Providence is ready for your business... it’s whether your business is ready for Downtown Providence.

Foot traffic from students, residents, and visitors. A loyal customer base that comes back, in a city that’s actively growing with the infrastructure, advocacy, and community to support it.

Downtown Providence isn’t just a place to open a shop — it’s a place to build something that lasts. And with May being National Small Business Month, there’s no better time to turn that idea into a storefront right here in our city.

Rhode Island has always been a state worth staying for.

But staying is getting harder.

We’re digging into the housing crisis: what’s driving it, what’s at stake, and what actually works. This is the start of a bigger conversation, and we want you in it.

Follow along. More coming soon.

Ask anyone who grew up here in the ‘80s. They’ll tell you: Downtown Providence wasn’t a destination. It was somewhere you avoided.

Today, residents aren’t just proud of it, they love it.

That transformation didn’t happen by accident. It took decades of civic leaders, business leaders, and elected officials choosing to invest in this city. Together.

That work continues... and we’re just getting started!

And a huge congratulations to State Representative Katherine Kazarian, elected House Majority Leader by the Democratic caucus, making history as the first woman ever to serve as Rhode Island House Majority Leader.

Rhode Island’s future is in great hands. Onward!
