RISD I DESINE-Lab It was founded on the premise that design has an important role to play in ensuring social justice.

DESINE LAB brings design thinking, practices and outcomes together with innovation and entrepreneurship to address issues of global poverty and social and environmental injustice DESINE-Lab brings design thinking, practices and outcomes together with innovation and entrepreneurship to address issues of global poverty and social and environmental injustice, while working collaboratively with target

populations to facilitate community-driven social and economic development. One way to do this is through social and economic development initiatives that utilize structures and processes of design thinking to set ground work and form context for creative catalytic action. Creating such a context, especially within communities in serious economic distress, requires developing strategies and tools that aid community members in finding and exercising their voice; tools that help them understand that different modes of behavior and specific actions allow for more than subsistence living; that allow them to recognize assets – including each other; that facilitate engagement in planning for the future; that help them anticipate various outcome scenarios and develop an understanding of the factors leading toward each; that allow them to communicate effectively, accept risk, and learn from but not be derailed by failure; and tools that aid in their assuming leadership roles. Of this, the ability to imagine is possibly the most important.
