Brown RISD Hillel Hillel is the center for Jewish life at Brown and RISD and is an integral part of campus social, cultural, educational, political, and religious life.

Brown RISD Hillel, the center for Jewish life on campus, is one of the largest, most exciting, and versatile organizations at Brown and RISD. Hillel is an integral part of campus social, cultural, educational, political and religious life. The Jewish community on College Hill prides itself on being pluralist and fluid; its different communities and interest groups overlap and enrich each other. Students come from a variety of backgrounds, both ideologically and in their Jewish experience. Some students had little connection with Jewish life before entering Brown; others made it a central part of their lives. Hillel is not just a religious organization. It also acts as a place for social events, community service events, lectures, discussions, and a place to hang out with your friends on campus. “I have one easy mitzvah, and sukkah is its name” ~Talmud, Avodah Zarah 3a

The sukkah is a temporary outdoor dwelling with at least three walls and an organic plant-based roof through which you can see the stars. For seven days and nights jews eat all our meals in the sukkah to commemorate the divine presence that sheltered the Jewish people during their journey through the desert in Exodus. The holiday of Sukkot also celebrates the final gathering of the agricultural harvest and expresses thanks for nature’s bounty.
