UCAP An independent middle school where the possibilities are endless for our students. Each year, UCAP works with approximately 140 students in grades 7 and 8.

At UCAP, they get the personal attention they need to develop the skills, attitudes, habits, and behaviors that will enable them to stay in school and succeed. Since opening in 1989, UCAP has helped over 1200 at-risk students achieve their academic potential.

Students and their chaperones were able to see history come to life at “The People’s House”, Arlington Cemetery, The Capitol Building, The Holocaust Museum, Mount Vernon, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and many more sites and memorials!

This is what fellowship looks like at UCAP! A number of staff members represented UCAP at the City Year Rhode Island Red Jacket GALA. This is UNITY. We all showed up for City Year's mission to serve, and for UCAP's vision to level the playing field! This is COMMUNITY! We all showed up to serve a student, Maurliyah C, who received the Young Hero Award, which represents a youth leader who is a pillar to their community. This is ACHIEVEMENT, and together we show POSSIBILITY!

Now is the time to reach out to House Representatives to share with them why students need a school like UCAP—a lifeline school for so many students—and urge them to support this new legislation.

UCAP supporters must reach out to key legislators to encourage their support of this legislation, to help it become state law!

We are proud to share that Neida Gilmete, UCAP's school counselor, is the recipient of the 2026 RITELL Changemaker Award!

This is a statewide recognition that celebrates an individual who works with multilingual students and has made a significant, innovative impact on their education and in support of their families. Neida, who speaks four languages, was nominated by team member Ariana Wohl for the consistent educational, personal, and emotional guidance she provides at UCAP, where she collaborates closely with our clinical social workers, the administrative team, and the teaching faculty. She co-leads an 8th grade advisory, co-teaches SEL lessons, and is also a leader on the Equity Committee.

Neida's lived experiences and linguistic/cultural competencies are invaluable to our immigrant students and caregivers, whether she is guiding through a social conflict, advocating for special services, or advising on options for next schools. Her outreach efforts for navigating the high school enrollment/application process include personalized attention for every family. Neida is a RITELL Changemaker!

We are very excited to share that UCAP was selected as a winner of the RIFC Attendance Matters Challenge!

The UCAP School was recognized for the “Most Improved Attendance Rate” – we showed the most improved attendance among Rhode Island Middle Schools. This achievement is only possible because of the hard work of our students and staff!

Keep up the great work, UCAP!
