Sojourner House Sojourner House is a comprehensive anti-violence agency in Providence, Rhode Island that serves abuse survivors throughout the state.

Sojourner House offers emergency resources, shelter, housing, and educational violence-prevention programs. All advocacy and shelter services are free of cost to victims of relationship violence. Many of our programs depend on the generosity of our neighbors and local businesses. Meet one of our fellow supporters and volunteers - Jacob Belt! Jacob is a Business Brokerage and Commercial Real Estate Advisor. He does business across New England and the Northeast, supporting owners and investors as they make business and real estate decisions.

Jacob is also father to two grown daughters, and uncle to 18 nieces, and learned about Sojourner House's work a year ago. Our mission is personal to him, and we are grateful to have his support!

Over the last five years, Sojourner House has been working to build a portfolio of residential properties that can be leased to survivors of abuse through our supportive housing programs. To date, we own 42 housing units between 11 properties.

🏠Our newest property— a 5-bedroom home in Providence— just wrapped up renovations and we held a little internal open house to celebrate!

In 2025, 63% of our clients were homeless at the time of their intake and nearly all of them stated that finding safe, stable, and affordable housing was their number one concern. With this ever-growing need in mind, we've been working hard to expand our resources and create more safe homes for survivors. We’re thrilled to be able to welcome clients into this beautiful new space and are grateful to the City of Providence for awarding us a Community Development Block Grant to fund it.

This project was a labor of love, and we want to say a big THANK YOU to Gloria Greenfield and Jake Dyer (both former Sojo employees and current friends of the org) who worked tirelessly to complete it.💜😊

We’re thrilled to welcome bestselling author Rachel Louise Snyder as the keynote speaker of Reimagining Victim Advocacy: A Conference on Housing, Justice, and Innovation.

Rachel is an award-winning author, journalist, and professor whose work focuses on domestic violence, human rights, and social justice. She is the author of the bestselling novel No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us and the memoir Women We Buried, Women We Burned. A Guggenheim Fellow and contributing writer for The New York Times, Rachel teaches in the MFA program at American University.

A massive shout out to Lizeth Garcia Garcia, one of Sojourner House's Bilingual Program Advocates!🥰

Lizeth works at the agency's human trafficking shelter, THEIA, and recently created a beautiful garden oasis on the property for clients to enjoy.

"The garden was designed to be a wellness space," said Lizeth, who encouraged the organization to apply for a grant from the Garden Foundation of Rhode Island earlier this year. "It's a relaxing environment where visitors can sit and decompress, or more practically, gather fresh herbs for cooking and tea."

The beautified space has already got a lot of use— Lizeth had a few kiddos playing with her in the dirt the other day, excitedly planting flowers in a new planter box🌼🍃🌸

When someone comes to Sojourner House seeking shelter, they are often at the darkest point in their life. Our advocates are aware of this fact and continuously go above and beyond to weave small moments of joy and kindness into each day. This garden is the perfect example of that.💜
