Doppelgänger Dance Collective (DDC) is a dancer-directed repertory company focused on the creation and performance of original, contemporary choreographic work for duet performance. Founded in 2015 by co-directors Shura Baryshnikov and Danielle Davidson, DDC offers choreographic commissions to a diverse group of dancemakers each season, asking for reconsideration of the traditional choreographer/d
ancer hierarchy as well as who controls the means of production. With an undeniable energetic compatibility and compelling chemistry in performance, the pair conceived of a project to capture this duality, their immediate bodily complicity, while also making a persuasive argument for dancers’ curation as a valuable form of creativity. PRESS QUOTES:
"Doppelgänger’s approach to performance is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. They are persuasively arguing- on stage as in their company administration- that contemporary dance in this country is vital, sustainable, and capable of deploying a powerful feminist perspective. The work is necessary and vital, and may just be the future of the art form." - Sydney Skybetter
Doppelgänger, which in German means, “double-walker” is an apt name for Barysh-nikov and Davidson’s contemporary dance company created for duet performance. Each dance showcases their impressive physicality, their diverse movement histories and techniques but is a dialogue with each other. - Sarah Baker, contributing editor for Art New England. This sense of oneness with the musicians is also apparent in the interactions between the two women. Whether they are dancing side by side or weaving in and around one another, their movement seems to initiate from the same breath, as if they had been working together for years. - Lawrence Elizabeth Knox, Contributor, The ARTery
“Danielle and Shura are so fabulously wired. They are excitable. They are perfectionists. They have thrown themselves into this process'' - Heidi Henderson
